Editor The Herald and News:
If your columns are not too full o

lor the purpose of publishing a rathe
amusing controversy with a Tepresen
tative of the <2hun.li known as Mor

elder or urMriier, was a ?..ung mjj
of genteel manners, courteoues an<
polite. Wrapped at door on Monda:
afternoon of this week and on be
ing invited to come in accepted th<
invitation and soon began to intro
duce his mission by offering 10 sell m<
a book.
The book, he said, contained th(
elements of doctrine taught by th?
founder and ecclesiastical body ol
the latter day saints. I refused tc
buy the book, stating to him that 1
!had the substance of the doctrines ol
this church already in an encyclopedia
which was authentic and which
was sufficient to furnish all the information
I needed on the doctrines and
polity of his church. However, I did
not purchase tine book and frankly
told him. I would not believe it if I
snoma purcnase ana reaa il mis
? statement precipitated a heated controversy,
which he evidently desired
more than he did the sale of the book.
I got right on the job witfh him, defensively,
not defiantly. His first
question was "To what church do you
belong?" t
"Presbyterian," I answered.
"But you are all wrong," he said.
"I represent the only church that can
possibly be right. This is well known
by every one who is well informed
on the history of therace. "All
cnurches but yours are entirely
wrong," I said.
"Yes, and with an air of supreme satisfaction
that one home run had been
made he proceeded to teach the things
that are most assured.y boli^ved Liy

adopting the doctrines of the Church
of the "Latter day Saints."
I had to confess that that was news to
me, something I had never before heard
nor seen in print, My ignorance '
the effect, at least, of probing the
deepest Caverns of his sympathy.
$e then asked me where I got my authority
for preacaing the gospel, declaring
with the same breath that no man
has any divine authority to preach
the gospel who had n^t gotten that
authority from the ecclesiastical
body of the church which he represnted,
stating as a reason for this
that seven hundred years after the

gospel was taken away from the
earth and that about the same time
the Holy Ghost left the earth never^
to return to it again till the end
of the world has come, on till tne
second coming of the Christ. He
further stated, and a little tract that
he left me corroborates the statement?that
the gospel that thd world
now has is that wftich was revealed
to Joseph Smith, the illustrious
founder or reorganizer of the apostolic
church, therefore, all those w!ho j
are now preaching the gospel, other i
than those who have been ordained
and authorized under -the regime of,
the Church of the ' "Latter Day i
Saints," are doing so without a divine
commission and are "blind leaders
of the blind."
Reader, imagine my chagrin1
when I was informed by this
i
fresh herald of "another gospel." a
latter day gospel, that the old original
gospel and the Holy Ghost both had ,
been removed from our earth more j
than a thousand years ago. My com-!
fort in the iguorance of these tnings
is that I am not alone. If the gospel
at any period of the Christian era
has been taken from the earth, or if
the Holy Ghost, whose abidiiie, p*er?

had of it. So. "if ignorance is biiss it
is folly to be wise."
These are some of the
"fresh' statements and "raw material"
information that were left to
me for meditation, by this eccleiastical
descendant of Joseph Smith.
The next that I had to learn from
this "perambulating encyclopedia"
was that muCit of the holy bible is

one passage seems to present a real
"life size" photo of these "house
creepers" and "silly women lead
ers." This "fresh" member, hailing
from the Salt Lake City school of the
prophets demanded evidence of me
that my church could raise the dead
and heal all manner of diseases,
stating that his church could and did
such miracles.
"H ave you ever healed the
sick or raised the dead?" I
said to mm.
He said, "No, I have not tried.''
"Well, could you do these miracles
if you would try."
"Ouess I could.'
"Then," I said, "bring on your goods
and let us have concrete evidence of
your miracle working powers."
Nothing, usually, is ever gained by
arguments on denominational differences,
for all the churches or |
branches of Christ's church have a :
right to their peculiar tenets and j
rrppri and. of course, the Salt Lake
City school is both fresh and salt ;
enough for self preservation, but I do !
