TILLMAN NOT BACKING SIMS. i ? Y "Withdraws Support From Orangeburg Man for Marshal. Washington, September 12.?Senator Tillman has nntifipd the rienart ment of justice that his official endorsement of J. L. Sims, of Orange, burg, as a candidate to succeed J. t Duncan Adams, as United States marshal for South Carolina, has been withdrawn. This information was given by the senior senator this evening in response to a question from The News and Courier's corres- j Ipondent who has observed the activity of friends of Ex^Sheriff Buford, of Newberry county, and asked Senator I Tillman if there was any possibility of his withdrawing the Sims endorsement. In explanation of his course, t Senator Tillman remarked that some people hatf been saying that he was trying to hog both offices, that is the r1ictri.pt attnrnM'cnin and thp marshal ship, and he felt constrained to take this action to clarify the situation, j Senator Smith, who had not actually endorsed Mr. Sims, hut had agreed to acquiesce in his nomination, was promptly asked what position he would take with regard to the mar O TN11 v>-, o 'r.
