an automobile. She was getting off a
street car when a speeding automobile
came along with the fatal result.
In some cities an automobile must stop
or slow up in passing a street car.
The wonder is some one has not been
killed in Columbia in this same way.
If automobile drivers are not more
careful it is going to result" in the passage
and enforcement of such stringent
laws that there will be no pleasure
in driving a car at all. And it
he rione. If these reckless driv
ers have no regard for their own life
or limb they should be made to respect
the life and limb of others.
As to motorcycles they seem to us
to be more dangerous than the automobile
and they certainly are a law
unto themselves. Even the town ordinance
as to these machines is not
Ac to stnn or sneed. The
CUiUl VVU. J- ^
town of Newberry has an ordinance
that all self propelled vehicles must
st<jpj at one. corner, hut it is enforced
to {apply only to automobiles. And

A mighty fine time to use the split
log drag. Did .you see "where a merchant
in some town?not Newberry?
gave every farmer -who would ride to
^ his store on a certain day on a split
P? log drag a- pound of coffee. He was
only a country merchant but in one
day he had given away spme fifteen
dollars worth of coffee. The farmers
who did this received more direct
benefit * than the merchant but they
were too selfish and too stingy to do it
and by not doing it they were robbing
themselves. How about organizing a
split log drag club?a club that will
work and do things?for the county of
Newberry.
Supervisor Hill is doing some good
work on the road to Whitmire and to

this work is due the meeting of the
teachers asociation at Whitmire on
Saturday. If the farmers who live
along this road wi'1 only spend a few
hours .after the rains and drag the
road they will have a good road all
the year. We thank Mr. Hill for making
it possible to have such a fine
meeting of the teachers as we had at
Whitmire' on Saturday.

The public spirit and the patriotism
