3I;ui Who Wrote'' tthramv Story About
king Turned Away as an
I'miersirable.
Washington, .Jan. 16.?Edward F.
jVIylius, the journalist, convicted in
London of libeling King George, for
which he paid a penalty of ten months
in prison, was ordered turned away
from the gates of the United States
today by secretary of Commerce and
labor Xagel as an undesirable immigrant
within the meaning of Amercan
immigration laws.
The cabinet official held that Mylius
was guilty of moral turpitude,
which barred his admission.
He denied that contention that
it was a purely political crime. Appeals
to the courts now can stay My<
lius' deportation.
"I ran-not assume," said Secretary
Xagcl in his decision, "that a law
K . which excludes anarchists and persons
who advocate the overthrow of
government or the assassination of
on public officials, was intended to admit
the publisher of a false charge
public officials, was intended to advance
a policic-al purpose or motives
for the act, or because the false charge
was directed against a king among
others, or because the- court in which
the trial was held regarded the political
aspect of the case as an aggravation
of the offense."
Proponents of Mylius advanced the
defense that he was convicted of seditious
libel?a political crime?that
his trial in London had been a farce
that in circulating a story attacking
the honor of the King of England he
was aiming a blow at monarc-hial government
in the interest of republicanism
which should make him a welcome
visitor to a tree country.
The aleged lib?'nous story, pub^
^ iished in the Pa- is Liberator, and for
the distribution o? which in Ei/gland
| Mv'ius was convicted, charged that
", George V., when a prince, contracted
a morganatic marriage in 1890 with
the daughter of Cir Michael CulmeSevrnour,
an admiral of the British
navy, now tl?<* wife of Captain Trerclvan
Vfl-mpr
Tn ordering the deportation of the
Journalist, Secretary Xagel was confronted
with the unique situation that
although Mylius was not eligible to
enter America, he was not barred
from returning to England, where his
alleged crime was committed.
INAUGURATION' WITHOUT BALL.
Pi'ociMont.plent Hiu Written Win. P.

to Cut it Out if Possible.
Trenton, X. J., Jan. 16.?Presidentelect
Wilson favors abolishment of
the inaugural ball. This became
known today when he sent a letter
to William Corcoran Eustis at Washington,
chairman of the inauguartion
committee, asking him to consider the
feasibility of omitting it.
Mr. Wilson's lettter follows:
"My Dear Mr. Eustis: After taking
counsel with a gr^t many persons
and assessing as well as I could gen
eral opinion in the matter I've come
to the conclusion that it'is my duty
to ask you to consider the feasibility
of omitting the inaugural ball altogether.
"I do this with a great deal of hesitation
because I do not wish to interfere
with settled practices or with
reasonable expectations of those who
usually go to enjoy the inauguration,
but it has come to wear 'he aspect of
a sort of public duty because of the
large indirect expense upon the government
incidently to it, and because
these balls have ceas-ed to be necessary
to the enjoyment of the visitors. *
"I hope most sincerely that this
re'quest will in no way embarrass you
and that I have not too long delayed
in making the suggestion.
"With cordial regards: sincerely
yours (signed) Woodrow Wilson.
Among several conferences held by
Governor Wilson today was one with
Senator-elect Broussard, of Louisiana,
-who had been invited by the governor
to talk over the various matters, particularly
the question of abolishing the
commerce court. Mr. ,Wilson had no
comment to make on the subject after
the conference. Mr. Broussard
expressed nimseit as in ravor or maintaining
tile commerce court or a court
of equal jurisdiction.
Washington Surprised.
Washington, I). C.. .Ian. 16.?}Ir.
Eustis declined to make any comment
because the letter l*id net reached
"him. He got in touch with George E.
Hamilton, chairman of the finance
urtrl nrrmipprl tn have n
meeting of all the inaugural officials
early tomorrow to consider Governor
Wilson's proposal. Mr. Hamilton declared
Mr. Wilson's suggestion to be
"ivmafkable, coming at this late
date."
