Monague, who deserted the routine 01,
army life, for the career of a "gentle-!
man" bandit, was brought into court j
today and held in $.">,000 bail.
Messages from Pittsburg and Philadelphia
tend lo confirm the young
man's boasts that, he operated success- j
fully in those cities. In his diary he j
had credited himself with robber- j
ries also in New York, Buffalo and j
Cleveland. He visited only express j
and railroad ticket offices.
# Monague. came to town 011 Tuesday
and registered at a good hot-el as William
J. Clayton. He spent two days
looking over the town before d-eciding
tc ait^mpt the robbery of an uptown
ticket office. His s-election was an untoriunate
c-ne for when he entered the
plac? last evening and demanded the
contents of the safe, there were half
a dozen persons present, one of whom
slipped out a rear door and gave the
alarm.
In describing his exploits to the
polic-e today Monague was particularly
anxious that they should understaand
that he was a "gentleman' bandit. He
robbed only those who could afford to
lose.
*I never took from the poor," he said
proudly. "My game was those who had
more than they needed. For instance
in Pittsburg, when I held up an office
there an employe? told me that the
$7 I had taken from him was all
he had. I promptly handed it back
to him."
Monague said that in robbing an of-1
fice in Cleveland, he cou44 find no rope'
with which to lie the clerk. "I told him!
to cut out the window cord," he continued
and after he had handed it to
me bound him securely.
"In Philadelphia, where I obtained
$127, I sent back $1.27 so they could
be able to make change in the morn
ing."
Monague is only 22 years of age.

New York, January 16.?"Izzy,"" the
painter, head of the New York under'
worlds "arson trust," came from Sing
Sing prison today to confess to put-*'
ting the torch to 200 houses within the
past few months. He unbosomed himself

The confession is said to bristle with
names of 'Izzy's lieutenants.' Some are
said to be notorious characters of the
toiidoiloft and the east side? some insurance
agents who worked with the
"trust" and divided the spoils, others
v adjusters of the big fire insurance
companies.
"Izzy, the painter," w;;s convicted of i
arson recently under the name of Isa-j
dore Stein and sentenced to serve not!

then he has been indicted again for
arson. While on his way to plead to
the last indictment he concluded to i
turn State's witness, and throw himself i

Mr. Whitman was amazed at the

Tuberculosis Cure.
Washington. Jan. 16.?In response

a report on a new German tuberculosis
serum forwarded to the state
department by Consul General Thackara.
Mr. Tftackara stated that up to November,
Dr. F. F. Friedman, one of the

stern battle the home rule bill-^passed
the house of commons tonight by
a majoity of 110. Later it was read
for the first time in the house of lords.
There were two divisions in the
lower house. Mr. Balfour's motion!
for/its rejection was defeated, 158 to
368, while the third reading was carried
by a vote of 367 to 257, one member
on each side having left the house
in the interval. x
The result of the election was too

tremendous demonstration, but Irishmen
