W BLEASE FOR TWO-CENT RATE.
m Says He Will Kspeai Recommendation
to general Assembly for Lower
I Passenger Rale.
* .
.Columbia, Nov. 25.?In speaking to
day of the proposea iwo-ceai i i^scu- j
ger rate on railroads in South Carolina,
Governor Blease reiterated his !
"well known advocacy of this plan, and
said that he would again recommend
0 to the legislature the passage of this
rate and would insist on this measure j
beii^j enacted into law. The governor j
ias recommended this in previous j
messages and advocated it while in the i
legislature as a member from Xewber- j
ry county.
The governor Jhad a coupon book put j
out by the inter urban road in this j
State. 250 miles for $5, which is also j
taken up on the train, on which any- j
one can check baggage, can be used I
by any member of the family and any i
person who happens to have the cou- J
pon book can ride on it. It is a book j
similar to this which those wanting the j
J' Jtwo-cent rate will ask that the rail- j
roads put on, and the fact that the!
interurban is using it will be used as
an argument why the railroads should j
put oil one similar. This matter is go- ;
ing to be one of the interesting meas- \
ures to come before the next general;
assembly.

L Chicago, Nov. 25.?Possessed with !
k i
the idea that she was pursued for dis-1
honorable purposes, Miss Maud Van j
Deusen, 35 years old, leaped from the
twentieth story of the McCormick:
building and was crushed to death on
the stone pavement of an alley at the
.street level. She jumped from a fire!
escape, nearly 250 feet above the j
ground. Her body struck another fire j
escape at the first floor and bounded
into the alleyway. Nearly all her;
bones were broken.
Miss Van Deusen, according to pa- j
pers iouna on ner per&uu, *?<*.:> a s^uuyj
teacher in Humboldt, Neb. It appears
that she had been seeking a position
here and had been obsessed with the
idea that she had been in danger from
"white slavers. She wrote that she had
been driven to appeal for protection
- from Chief of Police McWeeney to the
federal department of justice aud to
social settlement workers.

TVas Offered bj Bryan at Baltimore
V as Suitable Presidential Candidate.
WasMngton, Nov. 26.?Isidor Raynei.
of Maryland, one of the leading Demo
cratie members of the United States
senate and a man whose name v-a
offered to the Baltimore convention by
J Wm. J. Bryan as a suitable candidal
for tne presidential nommauou, aiea
here early today at the end of a long
illness resulting frcm continued atr
tacks of neuritis.
Senator Rayner had t>een in a comatose
state since last Wednesday,
with only one or two slight rallies. His
illness covered a period of about six
weeks, dating from the efforts made in
the joint political debate with Bourke
Cochran at Baltimore, last September.
Physicians compelled him to retire
from the canmaisn immediately after
that and he returned to his Washington
home, where he died at 6.20 o'clock
this morning.
For over ?ve years Senator Rayner
bad been a sufferer from neuritis. His
death creates a vacancy in the senate
that probably will be filled by a Republican,
through appointment of Got.
Goldsborbough of Maryland. While
legislature of that state is
^Democratic it does not meet this winter
and the Republican governor's
appointment will hold through open
sessions of the next congress.
The control of the United States
senate after March 4 may, on the death
of Senator Hayner, be changed from
Democratic to Republican.
The Republican whom Gov. Goldsborough
will appoint in his place will
hold office at least until the Maryland
legislature meets in January, 1914.
