' If Milwaukee, Wis., "Nov. 22.?John Schrank, who shot and wounded Theodore Roosevelt on the night of October 14 in Milwaukee, is insane and -nrafi latp this afternoon committed by Municipal Judge A. C. Backus to the northern hospital for the insane, near Oshkosh, until cured. Before being led back to jail to await preparations for the trip to the asylum, Schrank said: "I had expected they would find me insane because it was in the papers two days ago. I want to say now that I am sane and knew what I was doing all the time. I am not a lunatic and never was one. I was called upon to do a duty and have- done it. The commission has sworn away my life. Each member went upon the stand and said I was incurably insane. They can bury me alive if they see fit. I don't care what happens now." Commitment was pronounced fol lowing tlia preseniauun 01 an wu<tuotive report by a committee of five alienists in which the defendant was unanimously adjudged insane, and following the introduction of prima facie evidence of several witnesses. Questioned as to whether the defendant hM anything to offer, Attorney James G. Flanders, following a whispered conversation with Schrank, informed the court that the defense had liVUiiiiQ ??v ? District Attorney Zabel submitted a number of questions bearing upon medical terms to each alienist, all of which brought forth similar replies, the substance being that Schrank was suffering from chronic paranoia and all of the physicians agreed that it was doubtful if the disease could be cured. Carolina; and the grooming of the various prospective candidates has already been begun in earnest. The one desire of the present governor is to go to the United States senate. Since his re-election, he seems to have adopted a more conservative attitude on all questions. No one can | predict, however, just how long this j mood will last, but it is said that some I unknown groomers are trying to hold j down his excellency, so to speak. His j actions, so far. have indicated that this rumor is true. Must Beckon With Smith, Th#> nresent iunior senator from South Carolina is E. D. Smith. He I is the "farmers' man," and has made a! splendid record in the upper house of congress. Senator Smith, while he has ; / made no announcement, win mosi cer-1 tainly be a candidate for re-election. I He will be in a position to make a for-1 midable fignt to retain his position. There are others, John Gary Evans | has been a candidate for the senate in ! several campaigns since he left the ' office of governor of South Carolina j and he will undoubtedly be a candidate - i ia tne next eiecuun. , , There are some people in this State | who believe that Congressman Lever will be a candidate for United States senate. He has made no statement.
