YACOHN HAS CONFESSED? j
WAS SENTENCED TO DIE
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1).
realize that now. I did not at the
time realize just what I was doing.
I do now. I did it under circumstances
about which I would not care to go
into details here. At the very point I
thought myself the strongest, I found

devil had attacked me with a more
subtle and powerful temptation in the
Yery place I thought I could not be
tempted. I can not now go into the
details of the circumstances surround'
ing me when I fell, and I now assume
full responsibility and ask God to save
that girl.
"Now, as to the treatment of the
children out there; of course, I whipped
them, but I never did wish to be
c.riH'l. I did not abuse them, and had
desire to do so. But as hellish as j
this weight of sin has been, and de- j
spite the suffering of my body and;
soul, it has brought an -entirely new j
viewpoint of life. I am not speaking <
of this for sympathy; I am simply stating
it to make my position clear, and
I want to say this, that if it took all
of this to save, to bring me to where I
stand, and in spite of all this prosecution,
of all this shame and suffering,
if it has taken all of this to red-eem my
soul and save me from hell, I am
thankful for it today.
"I now have a better conception of
God and of man. With that fact in
view, realizing the cheapness of life,
# v - 1 " J

to man. I feel that if you will give
me another opportunity, after pleading
guilty to this charge, and let me have
another chance, I can be of more service
to God than ever before. I feel
that I can live a life of sublime service
and consecration to God. As dark
as it may seem, as disgusting as it may
seem to you, as hellish, as it appears,
I feel that in the depths of my heart
I can go forward in better service, and
I make this plea to you.
'What is life? It is a very small
tiling. It is a very short time here and
I do not regard it as much. So far as j
my suffering it would soon be over
and I wooiId be dead. Then it is a matter
of eternity. But my present plea
is that I have sinned, that I have suffered
tine tortures of the damned, that
if I am given another opportunity,
that the hold I now have on God, with
the strength of the new faith I have ^
ill Him from out of this awful sin, I .
believe that I can go out into the dives ,
of sin in this State and be of service
to my State and my God in reclaiming j
the evil-doers, in saving the State
great expense and in redeeming them
of their crimes and sins. e
"I believe truly that I can be of great ,
service to my God and my fellow man.
I love my life, it is true, but I simply j
feel that in view of this new-conception,
life is a very small matter. Life
is not eternal; it is a mere temporary
existence. That which comes from
God, to God must return. So far as
death is concerned it is very small;
it is the greater something which -
comes; after." r i
la closing his confession Vaughn
matte a plea that he be allowed to live
in order to prove to his wife that he i
couM reform and be a good man.
