OLD MANSION NOW HOSPITAL.
Irby Property in Laurens Converted
Into Splendid Building.
Laurens, Oct. 11.?After the first ol
* next month the Laurens county hospital
will be located in new quarters.
The old Irby Mansion, on South Harper
street, now the property of Miss
Julia Irby, founder and manager of the
Laurens hospital, is undergoing a geieral
overhauling for its new uses and
will be ready for occupancy November
1. ^
Messrs. J. D. Sexton & Son have the
contract and are pushing the work
energetically. The upper floor of the
building, on which there were origin
ally six rooms 22 by 24 feet each, with
^ a large hallway, has been transformed
into eleven patient rooms, four linen
rooms, operating and sterilizing
rooms, two baths and other necessary
equipment. The kitchen, sun parlor
and so on wil be on the first floor. A
new roof is being placed on the build x
ing, ihe front and back porches en
larged and remodelled. When completed
the eld mansion will be one
of the handsomest in the city and peculiarly
well suited for hospital purposes,
the grounds being ample and
splendidly located. The physicians of
city and several visitors, who have inspected
the new quarters, pronounce
the plans most admirable and state
that the Laurens hospital will be one
of the best in the State.
The Laurens hospital was estab
lished more than a yea ago. Miss Julia
Irby and her aunt, Miss MacFarlane,
both trained nurses of long and successful
experience, being the moving
spirits in the enterprise. A large new
-4 building, erected for residential purposes
by .Mr. \Y. L. Gray, was secured
and here Misses Irby a.:d MacFarlane
have conducted most successfully an
institution that has been a blessing to
this city and the surrounding country.
The hospital is now well established.
The pluck and enterprise Miss Irby
has shown and is exhibiting in managing
the interests of this institution nas
enlisted the hearty cooperation of the
citizens and public generally in pro
moting the cause.
The Irby Mansion was built by Miss
Irby's grandfather, Col. Jas. H. Irby,
a distinguished lawyer, a.id at one
time lieutenant governor of the State.
Subsequently the property passed into
the possession of the late 1 >!. J L. M.
Irby, son of Col. Jas. H. Irby, and father
of the present owner. A few years
ago it was purchased by Mrs. J. WiUe
Jones, an aunt of Miss Irby's. Upon
