TALKING BY TELEPHONE
BETWEEN MOVING TRAINS

Experiments Now Heine JIade in England?Description
of the I)e.

England has been making some efforts
lately to provide for communication
between trains in motion and has

phone," a device for this purpose.
The equipment is described as "con- j
listing of a telephone transmitter and
a pair of receivers fixed in a sound- J
proof telephone box in the guard's j

pended by iron brackets from the
coach. The telephone currents produced
by the voice of the operator
create what is described as a 'magnetic
field.' This field induces?on the
wireless principle?an electric current
in o mataiiiV conductor." which is bu-!
Tied in the earth by the side of the \
railway track, and connected with tele-:
phonic instruments fixed at stations. ,
Telephonic conversation is thus car- |
Vied on through the railophone just j
as through any ordinary telephone."

the subject to Daily Consular and j
Trade Reports:
"When the first experiments were j
made with this device there were no \
means of 'calling up' unless the oper- j
ator was in attendance. Tnis aeieci
Ijas now been overcome by the introduction
of a highly sensitive detecter
through the aid of which the 'electric !
impulses received on the train are |
picked up and 'relayed' into sufficiently
strong currents to ring a bell. In

it is stated that the inventor claims:

signalman can communicate with each ;
other, whether the train is in motion
' or at a standstill, for the purpose of j
traffic regulation in case of accidents,!
or during fogs or snowstorms, and
that messages can be sent with ease
and accuracy to and from passengers.
. . . The new detecter has been
adapted for automatically stopping a j
train without the intervention of the j
r\r- ririvpr Ry means of the aD- I

paratus provided on the train and in |
the signal box a remarkable cycle of j
' operations is carried out:
" 'When a train enters the main section
a red lamp is lit in the signal box
and simultaneously a bell is sounded.
Should the signalman fail to respond I
to these signals in 10 seconds the
lever is pulled automatically into the
danger position, rendering it impos'
Bible for the section to admit a second
train while the first is still there. Un- j
til the train has left the section the
lever remains electrically locked.
"'Under all ordinary circumstances!
the red lamp above mentioned is automatically
extinguished when the
train enters the clearing section and a
* green lamp is lit. The green lamp is
also extinguished when the train finally
leaves the section. Meanwhile, the
> train itself can receive instructions.
" 'In foggy weather, by the addition
of a special fog-signaling attachment,
the train can be automatically pulled
up.'
"It is also claimed that railophone
messages can not stray to other trains !
and that the system is not influenced
by atmospheric disturbances. The
tests which were made at Stratfordon-Avon
included:
p "'The sending of messages between
^moving train and Stratford station,
the warning of a moving train by audible
signal, signaling to a station
from a moving train, the stopping of a
train in motion and the stopping of a
train after it had been allowed to enter
a particular section.'

to show the possibility of employing
the railophone system 'to prevent a
collision which would otherwise have
arisen as a result of a signalman's
error discovered too late to be rectift
fied by ordinary methods.'"

of kidney ills will fail to heed the
word of a resident of this locality who
has found relief. The following is
convincing proof.
Mrs. J. M. Wheeler, Prosperity, S.

for a long time, causing terrible
pains through my loins and limbs.
There was also a constant acne m my
back and on some occasions I conld
scarcely get about. The kidney secretions
were unnatural and annoyed me
greatly. I consulted several physicians
and tried a number of kidney
remedies, but did not improve in the
least. I had about given up the hope

law procured a supply of Doan's Kidney
Pills for me at W. E. Pelham &
Son's drug store. He had read that
they were good for kidney trouble and
induced me to try them. I did so and
after I had taken the contents of two
boxes my backache had disappeared
and my kidneys had been restored to

mended Doan's Kidney Pills to many
of my friends and shall continue to
do so."
