POLICE IN JAIL.
Officers of TownTille Held at Ander
son, Charged With Crime Last

and Jim Baldwin, who were called i
by the officers to assist them in ar
resting Doc Welborn. a young moun
taineer, on the night. of September 2t
1910, were lodged in the jail here tc
night charged with the murder of Wel
born. Welborn was arrested for drunk
enness about 9 o'clock at night an
three hours later the guard house wa
burned.
The arrests came as the result c
detective work of M. C. Long, formerl
court stenographer of this circuit, bu
now an attorney at Walhalla. He ha
been working on the case for severa
weeks and it is understood that h
has gathered evidence to 'show tha
Welborn was murdered before bein
placed in the gaurd house and tha
the house was burned to hide th
erime.
Gave Up Voluntarily.
The four men came to Anderson to
day and voluntarily surrendered whei
they learned that the warrants ha,
been issued. The warrants were is
sued by local magistrate upon the af
fidavits of the foreman and a membe
of the grand jury. When seen at th
jail tonight the four men declared tha
their arrest is due to prejudice bu
they refused to name the person o
persons whom they think are behin
the move to convict them.
The four men are marri-ed and hav
families. Welborn's widow and chi]
dren are now working in a cotton mi'
here. Chief Holcomb said tonight tha
in his opinion Welborn set fire to th
guard house while lighting a cigarett
or in attempting to burn his way t
freedom.
Mr. Long was communicat-ed wit
tonight and he said he would com
to Anderson on Wednesday to reprE
sent the -solicitor when the prisoner
"would appear before Judge Prince fo
bail.
Caused Excitement.
The arrest of- the four men ha
eaused considerable excitement in th
Townville section and today many c
the leading business men of that tow
came to Anderson to go on the bond
for their release. An effort is besin
~made tonight to get Mr. Long to corn
to Anderson so that the applicatio:
for bail can be made tomorrow.
