TUTEN NOT GUILTY, SAYS JURY. Hampton County Farmer Freed of Murder Charge. Bamberg, Nov. 18.-Leroy B. Tuten, of Hampton county, is not guilty of the murder of J. R. Langford, accord ing to the decision reached by the jury in the case early this afternoon. Two and a half days were consumed in the trial of the case which was brought here from Hampton county. Leroy B. Tuten was accused of the murder of J. R. Langford, the alleged killing having taken place on the 29th day of last November, a short distance from the little town of Brunson, in Hampton county. It was alleged that Mary Harris was in company with the deceased at the time he met his death, and she appeared in court as an eye witness, testifying 'that Tuten com mitted the deed, using the butt of his gun to inflict the mortal wound. It is recalled that Richie Williams, a negro living on the Tuten place at the time of the alleged crime, figured prominently in the events leading up to the trial. He was not placed on the stand, although he has been held in jail and in the penitentiary since the death of Langford. He it was whom Mary Harris first charged with the deed, and upon her word a num ber of Hampton county citizens made chase for him. He was safely kept, however, after arrested, and later the charge against him was withdrawn. It is presumed that there will be nc further prosecution against him. WIFE SETTLES FAMILY TROUBLE Fatally Wounds Husband, Then Com. mits Suicide. Denton, Tex., Nov. 17.-Because he had filed suit for divorce, had lef1 thier home, at Forth Worth, and come to Denton and refused a reconcilia tion, Noy Pugh, 21, was shot and fa tally wounded by his 18-year-old wife who at once fired a bullet through her own brain and died instantly here early today. They were married lasi January. Pugh died several hours after be ing shot. TO SUE OLD LIQUOR COMMISSION Action Contemplated by Carolina Glass Company, It is Stated. Columbia, Nov. 17.--The Carolina Glass company today was granted permission by the supreme court to withdraw the -proceedings which they * instituted praying for a mandamus azgainst the dispensary commission, to -. compel them to hear.-the claim'which the glass company holds for $21,905.76 frsupplies sold to county dispen saries on the merits. It is understood that suit will be brought against the members of the old commission to compel them to pay the alleged claim, and this was the statement made here today from an authoritative source. The motion for leave to dis continue the proceedings was made on the 27th of July and the decision, per mitting them to do so, was filed with the suprerme court today by Chief Jus * tice Ira B. Jories. * CAPITAL INVESTED IN STATE South Carolina Keeping Up) With Sis * ter Sta'tes of South. Columbia, Nov. 16.-Over $25,000,000 has been invested in new enterprises in this State since January 1, 1911, ac * cording to the commissions and char ters recorded in the office of the sec * retary of State. The compilation is made of cbarters and commissions is sued through October 31., 1911, and shows that South Carolina is well abreast of the improvement wave of the South. These figures inidcate a * healthy condition of affairs through out the State and reflect some of the many improvements and new enter prises which are daily springing into existence. The figures by counties, which are approximate and not official, fix New berry's share at $455,000. BLEASE'S GAFFNEY SPEECH MILD Refrains From Detailed D!eenssion 'of Honea Path Lynching and Hasty Pardon. Gaffney, November 18.-Governor Cole. L. Blease appeared before a Gaffney audience today for the first time since his election to the office which he now holds. He spoke in the court house in this city, under the auspices of the local tribe of Red Men. His speech was for .e most part devoted to the Order, although he touched upon politics and mentioned the different events which have ex cited interest throughout the State He mentined the HoTnea Path inci dent, but stated that he could not dis cuss that on account of there being ladies present. Lynching Sentiments. Some one in the audience asked that he express himself on the An derson speech and the governor re plied, "Governor or no governor, when a negro brute puts his hands on a white woman, the quicker he is put six feet under ground the better," were his sentiments. This created quite a favorable comment from the audience. He touched upon his pardon record and defended it, and stated that when he reached Heaven he would feel proud of the record which he has set. He stated that h? wanted the friendship of every man in South Carolina, with tho exception of one, and said that if this man made over tures to him that he would spurn him, as he would know that, the pretended friendship was false.
