The probate judge has left signed marr.iage license certifi cates with Clerk of Court Goggans so as not 'to be a stumbling block in the way of anyone wishing to undergo the operation of matrimony. Langford h.as changed his car for an Overland Torpedo road ster, bought through White Fant's garage. Mr. Russell Tidmarsh on Monday bought an Ovorland 30-horse power touring car through the White Fant agency in Newberry. The. Ladies' Aid society of Aveleigh Presbyterian. church 'will meet Thurs day afternoon at 5.30 o'clock with Mi's. W. H. Carwile. Mr. T. 0. -Stewa'rt is preparing to build for himself and ~family a new residence On his lot between his house and Mr. J..P. Shealy's in Wilson street. Mr. Irby D. S'hockley has signed a contract for -the building of a six room cottage for Mr. C. B. Spinks on his lot between Mr. Aleck Singleton's residence , and the vacant lot corner friend and Wilson streets. The Palmetto State Stenographers association will convene in annual session in the chamber of commerce rooms in Newberry, on Friday morn ing, August 4, at 10.30 o'clock, Presi dent Lewis E. Wood, of Sumter, pr siding. The meetings of the associa tion will be public, and all the sta:1; raphers of Newberry are invited and urged to attend the sessions. OES FOR ANDREW, PRATT. Sheriff Buford Has Negro Charged With Murder Located in Fayette. Tflle, N. C. sheriff Buford left on Monday morning for Fayetteville, N. C., for Andrew Pratt, the negro charged with murder in the killing of Gordon Hughes, in the Maybinton conm'mnity, on Sunday, June 25. On Friday night Sheriff Buford got a telegram to come to a point near Carlisle where he would be givpn some valuable information. On Sat urday morning Mr. McHardy Mower kindly piloted the sheriff to the place designated and back again, Sheriff Bu ford returning with the information he desired and thankful to Mr. Mower for thle use of his car. /The information was about Andrew Pratt, colored, who was going by the name of William Allen, at Fayette yille, N. C. Sheriff Buford left on Mon day morning for Fayetteville, where the negro was held for him, the sheriff ~having' previously wired thle North Carolina authorities to keep him in custody. FNANK DEVORE'S GOOD WORK. Neat Sumi Raised to Put Newberry Prosperity Road in Fine Con dition. Mr. F. P. Devore, the active secre tary of the chamber of commerce and rapid R. F. D. carrier, has raised $400 from the automobile people for the purpose of working the road between Newberry and Prosperity. He has taken the matter up with County Supervisor L. I. Feagle and they will sand and clay the road, put ting it in excellent trim for public travel, suitable .to the rolling of every thing from an automobile to a wheel barrow. In carrying out the designs of the chamber of commerce in this particular Secretary Devore 'has dam onstrated the fact that no mistake was made when he was placed in the posi tion he now holds. Aided in- spirit and work by the worthy supervisor, the chamber of commerce, through the secretary, will ~have accomplished good in the improving of the Newber ry-Prosperity Toad. The automobile people ought~to be and eno doubt are glad of the opportunity to be of mate rial assistance in the laudable move ment. Mimnaugh's August Sale. Mimaugh announces his big Au gust sale to begin on Wednesday at 9 a. m.He has decided to carry over no goods and in order to do this has put the doors down and opened the gates wide. He has delayed his trip 'to New York a few days in order to be sure that room has been made for the fall goods which he 'has bought and which he expects to buy. This is a rare opportunity to secure goods at half price. The sale will continue the LITTLE MOUNTAIN REUNIO. The Usual Big Crowd Expected at Newberry College Gathering on Friday, August 4. The annual Newberry college reun ion will be held at Little Mountain on Friday of this week. This has long been one of the occasions looked for ward to by the friends of Newberry college and the people generally of Lexington, Edgefield, Saluda and New berry counties. It is not only a col lege reunion, but it is a reunion of friends from all the surrounding country, and the crowd usually reaches three to four thousand people. This year, as usual, the Columbia Newberry and Laurens railway will oYETate trains both ways for the ac commodation of those who desire to attend by rail. The following are the speakers for the occasion: Prof. J. E. Cannon, of Little 'Mountain; President J. Henry Harms. Newbeiry colleg: Rev. S. P. 'Koon, Prosperity, and C. J. Ramage, Esq., of Saluda. The -usual barbecue will be furnish ed on the grounds. County Farmers' Union. The County Farners' union will meet with the Utopia local union on August 3. The Herald and News one year for $1.50. DEATH OF MRS. DOROTHY N.#NCE. Widow of Major J. K. G.1;Nance and Sister of Col. Wm. Drayton Rutherford. Mrs. Dorothy Rutherford Nance, widow of the late Major John K. G. Nance, died at the home of her son, Mr. James D. Nance, on the old R. V. Gist place, in -this county, on Saturday afternoon at about 2 o'clock, and was buried 'at St. Phillips church on Sun day afternoon at 4 o'clock. Mrs. Nance was about 66 years of age. She was a daughter of Dr. Thomas B. Rutherford, and a sister of the lamented Col. William Drayton Rutherford, who, in the twenty-eighth years of his age, fell at Strasburg, Va., on October 13, 1864, at the head of his regiment.' Her father, Dr. Thomas B. Rutherford, was a grand son of Col. Robert Rutherford, of 1e volutionary fame, and her mother, Mrs. Lauya Adams Rutherford, was a direct descendant of the Adams family of patriots who fought for their coun try in Massachusetts. She was married to, Major John K. G. Nance in 1864. Major Nance h-.d a distinguished war record, being pro moted from first orderly sergeal to major. His promotion from captain to major came when his kisinan, Col. Janies D. Nance, was mad.e colonel of the Third regiment of Kershaw's bri gade-the old First brigade of the First division of th6 First corps of the immortal Army of Northern Virginia. After -the war he was engaged in planting in Newberry county. He was three times elected auditor of the county. He was a leading spirit among the Democrats during -the days of re construction, and lent all his. energies and talents to the great upheavel in politics in 1876 that brought about the overthrow of the negro party and re stored the government -to the white people of South Carolina. He died in 1884. Descended from a long line of dis tinguished ancestry on both sides of her family,'Mrs. Nance was a woman of strong 'character and of 'many graces of person and charms of man ner. She was a woman -whose death is a distinct loss to the county and to this section, and ber family have the deep sympathy of hundred of frienids in the sad bereavement. She is survived by two sons-James D. Nance, of the county, and Dr. John 'W. Nance, df Lake City, Fla. Four daughters survive her-Mrs. J. A. Sease, Mrs. Caldwell Ruff, Mrs. James Lominick and Mrs. John Suber, all of the county.' Death of Mr. T. H. Chalmers. Mr. Thomas Hayne Chalmers died suddenly with acute indigestion at his home in Newberry on Monday morn ing at about 9 o'cl'ock. He was taken sick after midnight Sunday 'and, get .ting worse, Dr. Gilder was called .in 'about 6 o'clock .Monday morning, but 'death had already nlarked its victim. Mr. Chalmers had. attended the Orr meeting Sunday andt was apparently in his usual health. On Sunday after noon he ate some watermelon, and, as stated above, was seized with acute indigestion a little after midnight. The interment will take place in Rosemont cemetery by the grave of 'his wife, service to 'br, held at the ~house of hi's son, Mr. Thos. C. Chal m'emr, at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J. WV. Carson. Mr. Chalmers 'was 59 years old. He ~was a consistent and loyal member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church. To\ say th.at one- was a good man is to pay the highest complimenit to a name. Hayne -Chalmers was a good man, and an .intelli-gint one whose modesty held him back, but his intimate friends knew his real worth. He leaves a son, Mr. Thos. C. Chal mers, and one daughter, Miss 'sara Chalmers, one brother, Mr. M. L. Chal mers, and one sister, Miss Janie Chal mers. Death of George Alva Hope., George Alva Hope died at his home at Hope Station, just across the New berry line, in Lexington county, on Sunday, following an illness with ty phoid fever. Mr. Hope was about thirty-four ru2osfyearo: 9,o ?I,Plib MRDL SH years of age. He was married in Feb ruary of this year to Miss Ida Beatrice Bedenbaugh, of the lower part of New berry county. He is survived by his wife, his mother, a sister and two brothers. The funeral was held on Monday at noon at St. John's church. Mr. Hope was a young man of fine traits of character and of a bright na ture and genial disposition which, made for 'him friends wherever he was known. He attended Newberry col lege here and was popular in New berry. There is an additional p-eculiar tinge of sadness in the fact that he leaves a bride of only half a year. His wife and 'the entire family have the loving sympathy of friends in this cit and throughout N,e.wberry county. Take Notice.
