COL. THOS. B. CREWS.
The passing of Col. Thomas B.
Crews at Laurens on Sunday morning
brought to a close a long life of con
spicuous service to his people. The
call of duty was to him as the voice
of God, and without hesitation, and
without fear, and without regard to
the consequences, he obeyed.
Deep sorrows entered into his life,
but there was no murmur nor com
plaint as he drained to the bitter dregs
the cup which was pressed to his lips,
and that no taint of bitterness was
left in his heart shows the heroic
mold in which he was cast.
He loved his State and the South
passionately, and his patriotic loyalty
and devotion were evidenced by his
works. As a soldier upon the field of
battle fighting under the Southern
Cross, as one who did more th'an a
man's part in the redemption of South
Carolina from negro rule, as news
paper writer and editor, as legislator,
and in every other position which he
was c'alled upon to fill during an ex
ceptionally eventful life, he was true.
to every trust.
Personally, he was a most lovable
man. The courtly graces of the civili
zation of the old South were his. He
was tender, and he reverenced wo
manhood and loved flowers and little
children. He had~ a simple creed and
a simple faith. He believed the high
est life was that which was lived for
the good it might do and for the hap
Piness which might be brougt into
the world, and he doubted not the
fmal triumph of the right.
The newspaper men bf South Caro
]ina will miss his genial presence and
his kindly smile at their gathering in
Columbia this week. He was for a
time president of the Press associa
tion, and he always enjoyed attending
the meetings and greeting his breth
ren.
We feel a deep personal loss in the
death of Col. Crews.
We understand that some of the
members of city council are advocat
ing spending some three or four thou
sand dollars in the, permanent im
provement of our side walks and
streets. It is the proper thing to do.
It would be better to spend three-i
fourths of the money, at least that is
put on our streets, in permanent im
provements, and as these permanent
improvements are made, the cost of~
maintenance would be reduced from
year to year.
We understand that Newberry has
raised about Aull the money needed
for her park.-Anderson Daily Mail.
Newberry may have all the Aull
that she needs, but her park
meeds a great deal more money. We
are -going to get that, however. New
berry doesn't move fast, but she moves
seyand the park is coming.

affairs but as he has been indicted for
conspiracy, he may yet appear.

reverses the decision of our supreme

"Why," suggested her dearest

Johnny-Papa, would you be glad
if I savied a dollar for you?
Papa-Certainly, my son.
Johnny-Well, I saved it for you,
all right. You said if I brought a

this week you would give me a dollar,
and I didn't bring it.
Foreman Ole's Report.
The section foreman was laborious
ly filling out a report covering the
killing of a cow by the second section
of No. 64.
The fussy claim agent certainly re
quired an unreasonable amount of in
formation, as evidenced by the print
ed question on the blank form:
"Number of train?"
"Number of engine?"
"Name of conductor?"
"Name of engineer ?"1
"Speed of train."
"Where was animal struck?"
"Etc., etc."
Ole succeeded but indifferently un
til he came to the final qu;estion, and
ere he experienced the inward con
sciousness of one qualified when he
wrote, in rely to:
"Disposition of animal ?"
"He ban wan kind and gentle cow."

It was on a little branch railway in
a Southern State that the New Eng
land woman ventured to refer to the
high rates. "It seems to me five cents
a mile is extortion," she said, with
frankness, to her Southiern cousin.
"It's a big lot of money to pay if
you think of it by the mile," said the
Southerner, in her soft drawl, "but
you just think how cheap it is by the
hour, Cousin Annie-only 35 cents."

Barnwell People.
The chill and fever season ap
proaches in localities where there is
stagnant water the favorite breeding
places for the malarious mosquitoes.
These chill and fev'er causing mosqui
toes bite only after dark and if people
living where such mosquitoes exist
can keep them out of their rooms and'
remain indoors from 'before dark until
sunrise they will escape chill and fey
er attacks. The United States govern
ment says so. It also says that 5
grains of sulphate of quinine taken
daily by a grown person for a period
of four months will free the body
from all malarial parasites
