Entered at the Postoffice at New berry, S. C., as 2nd class matter. E. H. AULL, EDITOR. Friday, May 5, 1911. City council at its meeting on Tues day evening appropriated one hun dred dollars to aid the Observer in the publication of an industrial edi tion which it proposes to issue during Chautauqua week. Now that the chamber of commerce has decidied to have a home coming 'week it should be the purpose or every citizen to boost it and push it alongi. Write to your friends and tell them to come and make a visit to Newberry at this time. Remember the date, June 18. We congratulate tbe Observer on its ability to secure that appropriation of one hundred dollars for advertising the town. It establishes a precedent that it will be easier to secure appro priations for other li'.venterprises. Heretofore council has generally held to the contrary on such propositions. We are satisfied now that council will readily appropriate fifty dollars to the placing of an advertisement of the town in the booklet which the Chautauqua association will get out. The subscription list for the park is still open and while some new names are being added for each issue of the paper there is room for many more. Come along and help a good movement Don't wait. to be called. To build a park will be to build a monument to yourself which will not only be a memorial to this generation but will be a lasting benefit and pleas -ure to all sucee9ding generations in Newberry. And they will bless you for it for all time. How can any pa triotic citizen hesitate or delay. The booklet which the Chautauqua association contemplates getting out will be for the benefrt of the associa tion, and not' for the profit of any in dividv. It should receive the unan imou ndorsemenat and support of all our business men, for the reason that all the business interests of the community, will be benefited by the success. of the Chautauqua week. The thing is for every citizen who-has the interests of his town at heart to begin right now and talk Newberry and Chautauqua week and thus help to make it a success. It will help the entire county. THE COLUMhBIA-NEWBERBY GEENVILLE ROAD. A trip over the dirt road from Co lumbia to Newberry was made by the editor of The Herald and News on Wedinesday in a ne~w Oakland, driven by Mr. W. C. Waldrop. The Oakland is the property of Mr. V. L. Smith, cashier of the Bank of Pomaria. It is a beauty and one of the smoothest running cars in the market. The roads are in fairly good con dition, though -no work has been done on ithe road in Lexington in several weeks, except the stretch between Lexington and Columbia. 'rhe chain gang is now at work on that portion. We understand that the supervisor will start at the Broad river bridge as soon as he finishes the road to Co lumbia and will work the road via Spring Hill. This is a change of pro gram from what was announced some weeks 'ago. It wa's then the program to build from Lexington to Chapin and on to the Newberry line and then build from Chapin via Spring Hill to the Broad river bridge, but it will make very little difference which road i-s built first, just so the building goes on. The meeting in Columbia on Wed rLesday was not largely attended, but those who were there seemed in ear nest and it is hoped results will fol low. Assurances were given that the road from Asheville to the South Car olina line was now building and most of it was macadam and that the road; -would be extended to Greenville, and fromn Greenviller to the Laurens line the road was now built. From Newberry to Columbia are several sections that need immediate attention. Between Columbia and Charle4ton the people are alive to the importance of the subject of improved highways and the time is not far distant when there will be a first class highway between Charleston and the mountains and it behooves Newberry to keep in touch with the movement if she de sixes to be on. this highway. We are making some headway in tnis county on this line of progress but we are not doing what we should. There will also be a road built from Newberry to Union via Whitmire and on to ;Spartanburg, if our people will manifest the slighest interest. There is no greater agent in the development of the rural districts than the build ing of good roads. * ~ THE IDLER. *. * * * * * *S * * * *J To The Idler: A college professor in one of our State institutions told me the other day that there was no command in the Bible prohibiting the wife working on the Sabbath day. I have read with interest and pleasure the fact that you have time and again quoted the Bible and I take it, there fore, that you are more or less a stu dent of this good book, and I would like to have your views on this sub ject. A Husband. -0 Now, I do not propose for "A Hus band" to get me into trouble even though I be neither a husband nor a wife. I would lilve to know who this professor is, and if he has so much time that he can be raising ques tions like this which are calcu lated 'to put good people in .trou-,l ble. I should think the State paid 'him to do work different from research of this, character. I suppose because the wife is in the habit, in most cases at least, of doing all the work this college professor wanted to find some good excuse and a high authority for it. But as he has raised it suppose we look at the authority just a little, and see what it doe's say, and see if there is any really .good ground for the position of this pro tessor. Exodus, Chapter 20, verse 1(, 'says: "But the seventh day is the SaDbath' of the Lord thy God; in it thou shalt~ not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservanat,1 nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle,1 nor thy stranger that is within thy gates." Aind verse 11, says: "F5or in1 six days the Lord made heaven and~ earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore1 the Lord blessed the Sabbath day andI hallowed it." i Now while it is true that "wife" is not mentioned among those who are. not to labor on the Sabbathi day, this college professor shouid rememberk that this same Bible is authority for the statement that whren the relation of man and wife is assumed they twain become one flesh, and the "thou" in the commandnment reters to the wife as well as the hustband, and I want to say to "A Husband" he can't get any consolation from a proper in terpretation of this good Book to maken his wife work on the Sabbath day, while he lounges around and reads the Sunday paper and does. not ev:en go to church. No, sirree, my dear si,a you will have to get thiat college pro fessor to come again. I'll bet my last year's panama, that two thirds-yea, even more than that-of the -good wives of this land will agree with me. -0 Well, 'I suppose Chautauqua week i is one proposition on which the good; people and the bad people-4that is o course if there are any bad people in Newberry-will agree and unite their i efforts to make it a.success. The pa triotic people of Newberry should Tal ly to the support of those geintlemnen St who were god enough and gen-erous y enough and patriotic enough to guar- s antee a week of entertainment and in- a struction for the whole community. I 0f cannot stretch my imagination suffi- p ciently to conceive of a man who lives t in Newberry who is little enough to t withhold his support from an enter- s prise of this cha, racter. If he be here fih he ought to go 'through a key-hole and fa pull the bole in after him, and not let anyone know of the transaction , and try to forget it himself. That's what I think and I -don't give a snap of my little toe whether anybody likes p it or no:. If :he people can't agree ti on this and pull together fo.r its suc- Cl cess then they are truly to be pitied.
