IN LOVING KINDMNESS. He Carries His Father and Mothel Away.-Remarkable Careers of Father and Son. Capt. S. Newton Williams has re sisned his position as conductor oy the Abuville branch railroad, whicl position he has held for 23 years. Capt. William's son, Superintenden Henry Williams, came to Abbevilli last Suaday in his private car to mov( his father and mother to Anderson They left on the 4 o'clock train Mon day afternoon, April 10, 1911. Advancing years and the 'nfirmitie, of age made it necessary for Captaii Williams to resign, and thus it wat that the last chapter in the work o a ing an-d useful career has beei o- fifshed. He can no longer work, bu he has satisfaction in the though that few men have ever done mor work or rendered a more faithful ser vice. For fifty years he has been continu ously in the service of the railroad and of that time he and his good wif' have spent 23 years in AbbevillE where he has true and loyal friends. While Capt. Williams has reason t be proud of his own career, the lif and character of his son, Superintend ent Henry Williams, verifies the scrip tural statement that a wise son mak eth a glad father. Beautiful Incident. A beautiful incident connected wit] Gaptain Williams' breaking up house keeping and thus moving froi -amongst us, was in the contention be tween his children as to which shoul have the pleasure of caring for thei physically aged and almost helples parents. Finally it was agreed t leave the decision to the parents. BE eause of her children Captain Wil liams decided to go with his daughtei Mrs. Anderson, of Anderson, and thu we are again Impressed with anotht Biblical statement that children children are an old man's crown. St perintendent Henry Williams has n children in his household, and therf fore consented for his father and motl er to go with his sister on conditio that they spend at least a part of thei time at his home. It is beautiful 1 see children not only willing, but any ious, to contribute to the pleasure an eomfort of their parents. They obe 'the command: "Honor thy father an thy mother, that thy days may 1 long in the land which the Lord til God giveth thee." From Humblest Position to Highe: Office. Beginning at the age of 14 yea: and taking the humblest position C the road some 37 years ago, Hena Williams's merit has been reward< by various promotions until now I has reached the superintendency, ti highest office in this civision of ti great Southern railway. In his pr motion we have the best evidence th his merit. his sincerity, his fixed d termination and his unswerving fide ity have been appreciated by one the greatest roads on earth. His pr motion and his distinguished servic are not only proof of his ability, b they furnish the best evidence of t sagacity of those who are responm ble for his -elevation to tne hIgh offi which he holds today. Right Man in Right Place. Mr. M. B. Syfan, who has succeed to the office made vacant ny tne resi nation of .Capt. S. N. Williams, is t right man for the right place. A bi ter man could not be found for t place,,and no man could be found 'w would ibe more acceptable to the pi ple of Abbeville. Always genial, ways competent always accommod . ng, he stands a prince among gc fellows. Evidence of High Regard. While we know nothing of names or the number of friends v called at their home to express spect and good wishes for our parting nighbors, it is certain t: many c \at their car to say go bye to C- and Mrs. Williams, b of whom, because of age and fee health, were confined to their couch Mrs. R. E. Eill, Mrs. M. B. Syl -president of the U. D. C.'s in At ville county; Mrs. Lucy Thomson, Messrs. C. D. Brown, W. G. Chapn P. A. Cheatham, A. B. Cheatham, T. Coleman, Judge R. E. Hill, R. Hill, A. B. Morse, L. T. Miller; Dr R. Nichles, Chief Riley, W. C. Sher: Hugh Wilson, J. W. Wright, Dr. J Nichles, Dr. J. W. Keller, Capt. J Perrin. Long Careers. Employees on the A St xille Bra *are notable for their high charac their faithfulness, their long ser and their acceptability to the tra ing public. Engineer George W. Syfan, ser hauled the rails and the cross tie finish this part of the track in st:mer of 1851. He continued in ,.service as locomnotive engineer f that time until 1891, when, from e esand the infirmities of age, could no longer serve the road. Careful Engineer. Mr. Syfan was well known for hi care in running trains. In his lonc career he never had a serious acci dent to engine, train or person. A far as we can now recall he nevei killed anybody except a boy. Thal boy hid under a bridge or trestle, and on the approach of the engine he rais ed his head between the ties in tim( for the cow catcher to cut his bead off The court and everybody else exhon orated Mr. Syfan from all blame fol sending that boy prematurely to heav en. A distinguished, or exceptional hon or was paid to Mr. George W. Syfan ir the act of the company in placing hi name on the pension roll for years i Hd lived to the age four score years. In his day he was not only a goo railroad man, but he was a good cit izen, and a zealous churchman. H( reared a large family of children wh< are an honor to him. One son, - Johi Syfan, has been an engineer for near ly fifty years. Another son, M. B. Sy fan, has been baggage master on th, Abbevile branch for 25 years. In rec ognition of his worth and efficiency he has just been promoted to the con ductor's office, which was made va cant by the resignation of Capt. Wil liams, who had been on this part 0 the service for 23 years. LODGE DIRECTORY. Woodmen of the World. Maple Camp, No. 437, W. 0. W r meets every first and third Wednes day eveling at 7.45 o'clock.
