Charleston, March 17.-S. J. C., in
the News and Courier of this morning,
writes:
The local collegiate baseball season
is on!
The lid came off yesterday evening
at 4 o'clock, when the Newberry col
legians crossed bats with tha Coll"ge
of Charleston ball tossers on the col
lege park diamond. Despite the sharp
winds, which swept the, diamond and
kept the spectators on the move, the
game was sharply contested from
start to finish, and several plays sav
oring of mid-season form were pulled
off.
Fortune smiled on the visitors dur
ing the first three sessions, and this,
coupled with some good stick work,
produced a Newberry vi:.)ry, 4 to 1.
Newberry has an exceptionally fast
team this season and will make a
strong bid for the State championship.
Less than a week ago the Columbia
S. A. L. team won from this college
bunch by the slim margin of 4 to 2.
-Yesterday was, however, the first
game of the year for the local lads,
and the fact was evinced in the slight
nervousness displayed by them in the
opening innings. Newberry lost no
time and tallied thus in the initial
session. After Boozer's death, Smelt
zer was safe on Levi's wild heave. He
took second and scored a moment lat
er on a similar throw by Gaffney.
Scores on Overthrow.
In the second Floyd scored on an
overthrow of first base by Pregnall.
The college took a turn in their -half
of the third. Mobley ran for Levi,
" after the latter obtained a life on four
wild ones, and stole second, taking
third on Hazel's overthrow of the
keystone corner. He did not remain
anchored for any length of time, how
ever, as Pregnall scored him with a
beautiful single over second, the first
College of Charleston safety of the
game. The score was now 2 to 1, and
the college stock began to look good,
but not for long, as Newberry scored
the clinching and final runs of the en
counter in their half of the same
round. With one man down, Epting
singled. He watched~ Hazel fly out to
Leonard, and then progressed to the
third station on Floyd's one-time tap.
Wright, after much cogitating and
prelinmnary fouling, reached a decision
and drove a long one to left centre,
which netted two runs and two sacks
to the batter.
After this the two teams settled
down and a line of goose eggs plus
some very good plays were the only
results of the ensuing innings.
-Good Pitching.
The opposing twirlers pitched good
ball. Epting, in particular, being very
stingy 'with the safeties, and having
U control of the sphere at all times. In
addition he completely frustrated the
attempts of eight batsmen three times
in succession. Though a trifle wild,
Levi was a puzz?s to his opponents.
His work gives promise of some
classy twirling later in the year. After
his infield settled down yesterday he
was unhittable. The fielding feature
occurred mostly in the out-field and
in the glove of the Newberry first
sacker, Wright. This man's one-hand
ed stab of a hot one off John Gaff
ney's mat in the ninth was about as
fine as anything which the local fans
are destined to view this season. Levi
likewise took a red-hot one in a single
paw during the evening, doing some
stonewall defensive work.
Leonard a Star.
Wise in left and Floyd in centre
field played neat games, but the real
feature of the evening was Leonard's
work in the left garden. Leonard is
r a new man in the college line-up,
though it could not have been guessed
from his performance. Five put-outs
and a humming two-sacker stand to
his credit. His catch off Boozer in
the eighth was great.
The game was a good one, and, al
though they are disappointed over the
outcome, the local boys realize that
the visitors deserved to win. The
Charleston team will meet Newberry
again on their tour or tne State, when
they will endeavor to come back. Uim
pires Workman and MacFadden gave
r perfect satisfaction, a featur of the
game being an absolute lack of kick
ing. Governor Blease helped to swell
the rather small attendance with. his
prescnce, and cheered his home team
on to victory.
