SEN. TILLMANSOBBING
SINKS INTO HIS SEAT
BREAKS DOiN IN MIDST EULOGY
OF DOLLIVER AND CLAY.
Sad Thoughts of Departed 'Friends
Too Much for South Carolinian in
His Weakened Condition.
Washington, Feb. 18.-So affected
by his emotions and weakened by the
illness with which he was stricken
during the last session of congress as
to be unable to continue, Senator Till
man, of South Carolina, today sank
sobbing into his seat shortly after hav
ing begun a speech n eulogy of the
late Senators Alexander S. Clay, of
" Georgia, and Jonathan P. Dolliver, of
Iowa. Senator Bacon, of Georgia,
moved hastily over and took a seat
1by the South Carolinian. A few words
from Mr. Bacon in a measure restor
ed the control of his nerves to Mr.
Tillman and soon thereafter he feebly
left the chamber.
An Affecting Scene.
The scene was an effecting one, and
members on the floor and spectators
in the gallery were visibly moved. The
attempt to speak at length was the
first Mr. Tillman had made since his
return to his duties, and his friends
had feared it might prove too great
a. tax on his impaired strength.
Mr. Tillman's concluding words
were:
Great and Good.
"Dolliver, as I recall him, was a
0 great man.. Great men are plentiful
in this country, but not as great as
Dolliver. Good men are plentiful in
this country, but not as good as Clay.
They both have left us and we know
not how soon our own time may come.
I feel that with especial force. Die
but-but I can not go on, Mr. Presi
dent. I have thoughts but the words
I will not come. So I will sit down."
