The one-time ruler of the Ilion
islands is a graduate of Newberrv
college of the class of '79. He is now
on his way back to New York from
Newberry college, where he attended,
the commancement exercises of the
institution. His wanderings over the
face of the earth have not divorced
him from his alma mater.
"King" Hobbs' story of how he
mounted the mat throne of the Ilion
islands and kinged it over 20.000
dusky New Hebridians for nearly a
year sounds like a chapter in "Robin
son Crusoe."
Wrecked in the middle of the
souVh Pacific in a typhoon, he floated
or two nights and a day with a life
elt around him until a canoe full of
ew Hebridians picked him up. They
carried him to their island and soon
allayed his fear of being immediately
put in the pot by their kind treat
ment. After a while war broke out
between the natives of the Ilion is
lands and the people of a neighbor
ing island, John F. Hobbs of Dutch
Fork led a company of 400 men into
battle as their chief. His side came
off victorious and his rise in diplo
matic New Hebridian circles bega..
Old King Died.
The king of the Ilion islands, a fat,!
lazy old savage, died in the course
of time without leaving an heir to
his mat throne. A big talk fest was
in order. All the chiefs and medi
cine men got together and gabbled
for days. The hitch in electing ai
new king was that no one wanted K
-elevate one sub-chief above the rest,
as this would be sure to precipitate
a civil war..
Finally one old chief arose and in
glowing language suggested that the
crown and purple robe be given to
Chief Hobbs, the official representa
tive of the Great White Spirit. His.
suggestion met with instant favor.
'The biggest medicine man in the
bunch hot-footed it over to the cocoa-*
nut palm. where Chief Hobbs had
sitting and garbed him in the
al robes. Unlike Caesar, he did
thrice refuse the crown. He fail
to say so, but possibly the vision
the pot still haunted him and he
as afraid to thrust aside the scep
er.-,
Such, says Mr. Hobbs, was the
anner in which he donned the pur
ple. From his mat beneath the co
coanut tree he meted out justice to

months.
