strenuously opposed as in the view of
many, making divorce more easy in
Virginia, was stricken from the eal
ndar in the house of delegates to.
lay after an impassioned debate by
aD vote of 53 to 16. It had passed ths
senate.
In connection with this bill a sensa
ional statement was made by a mem
ber of the house, Mr. Johnson of
Russell county, that he had been of
fered $400 to vote for the bill.
The incident aroused great indig
iation. Later it appeared from a
personal explanation made by Mr.
Johnson that a client of his, who was
eparated from his wife, had request
ed that he vote for the bill, and had
3aid that he would pay $400 to him as
bis lawyer if, under the propose.l
measure, he could secure an absolute
divorce. The 1lleged bribe thus ap
peared to be merely a tranaction
between lawyer and client and the
excitement ended.
Rambler Breaks Sales Record.
The world's record for rapid sales
f automobiles to individual buyers
was established at the Nifith Annual
Chicago Show when. Thomas B. Jef
fery & Company, makers of the Ram
bler sold one hundred and seventy
five separate ears, in seven days,j
making a total of three hundred and
fifty thousand dollars worth of au
tomob'iles.
Charles T. Jeffery, -head of the
Rambler company, under whose di
rection this enormous sales record
was made, says that the greatest sales
of cars during the next five years
will be made over that area stretch
ing between the capper country and
the southern rim of. the Texas Pan
handle.
Hundreds of farmers, - stockmen
and fruit growers bought cars at this
show.
-The.demand was .not for the low
priced car, as many had anticipate*,
but the buyers seemed to desire pow
er, comfort and quality more than
cheapness.
The average price of the ears at
taining the largest sales was two
thousand dollars.
'Last year the Rambler broke' all
previous show sales records when 160
f these cars were sold at an average
price of $1,900 each.
Britain's Real Fighters.
The Germa:n ihief of staff shook
bis head.
"No," 'he replied to the brilliant
assemblage about the council tale,
"we are not prepared to invade Eng
and.''
The veteran, Gen. Kleinerchnapps,
Looked amazed.
"But we have the fleet !" he oried.
"And the graid .army.".
''u thre submarines and the air
~hips?
"True."
"We know that the British fleet is
eattered and the army unprepared.
Why should we hestitate?"
"You forget the suffr'agettes,"
aid the echief of staff coldly. "
