GOOD ROADS YEN. State Association Heard Speeches From Several Notable Men. colambia, Jan. 18.-The eleventh axnual convention of the South -Car elina Good Roads asseatiion con vened% today at noom in the hall of tie house of representatives. There are several hundreld dele gates in attendance, men representing every county in the State and of ev ery profession. There was another meeting of the association held to igUht at which a number of excellent addressas were, delivered. The last ss&on of the asociatkon will Tbe keld in the Columbia City Counci vaimber tomorrow morning. A strong programme has been prepar4d. for this meeting. The sessions today in th,, hall of t'e house of representatives were op eed with prayer by the Rev. E. 0. Watan. The welcome to the city of (olumIia was dlivered by Maylor Reamer, on behalf of the State by "euteinant Governor McLeod, and f*r Richland county by F. H. Wes ton.. .. A& instructive address of the morning was that of C. M. Garris, on the government and its relation to transportation. Some vital sta tioties were brought out in this ad F. Horton Coboek, a professor in tke University of South Carolina was the next speaker. He is a man who knows good roads and some very ,ralaable suggestions were made. there are a number of the county bupervisors here aUnd these are the men that can tell most iwstructively just what has been done in the line of good roads in South Carolina for -hey are the men that the actual work of constr.ction comes under. These men ar elaboring to improve .the public highways of the State whieh are after all the State's most valuable asset. The annual report of President Hy a of the association was* read to .ight. His ad grs was down on the program of 'Good Roads.'' He told of the work that has been done in North Carolina; ad of the work that is being done. 'Nie several proposed national high -ways of travel through the South were touched upon by the speakers. Some very valuable suggestions were ien as to the constructionk and aintenanlce of the public highways. Somie suggestions for the uinpi-ove wient of the high;iays were given in an eloquent address by D. H. Wins lw, of the United States office of publio roads. FOUR AGRICULTURAL SCHOOLS IN STA' Hardin Bill Calls For Instituti , Operated Under Direction of Clemson. Columbia Record, 18th.
