IMER DLCAY COSTS MTTLONS. Millious of feet of timber and tin shed uLumber rot every year in rail oad ties, bridges, trestles, piles, arm buildings, fences. poles and .ine props. The lumber consuming ublic of the United States pays per aps thirty to forty million dollars year to make good the losses from ood decay. These great, drains are a source of re and more concern each year. hemists and engineers who have to o with the uses of wood are working kneeasingly on the problem. The U. S. Forest Service has men who de vote their whole time to it. The im portance of the problem can not be overestimated. Millions of dollarsi are annually saved, by preservative reatment of timbers, but much yet remains to be learned. . Wood. decay is caused by fungus, a vegetable growth sometimes so small that it can be seeen only with Smieroswope. Rs roots or branch s, like minute balu, fore their way into the wood tans ad absorb or eat away fm woid parts. The col -apse whih rmua is Called decay. Timber is artificially preserved by oreing into its cells and pores cer tain substantes which prevent the growth of fungi. As long as this substance is* present ~ in sufficient quantity, the germs of decay-the Tbreads and spores of fungus-ean not enter, and,the wood is preserved. This often means doubling and some times- treblingthe life of the timber. The United'States government con siders the investigations of the pre servative treatment of timber of su-ch importance that t-he business of One office of the United States Forest Service, that. of Wood Pres ervation, with new headquarters ac Madison, Wis., is given over entire y to the work of experiments in co perat-ion . with railroad empanies nd other corporations andindividuals. n prolonging the life of railroad ties, mine props, bridge timbers, enee posts and transmission poles. The lengthening of the life of 'imber means the saving of thous ds of dollars annually through do ing away with the heavy expense of labor- and cost of material for renew als.
