The cotton mill men threaten eur
tailment on account of 13 cent cot
ton. Again the consumer must ante
np or leave the game.--Orangeburg

Not this time. The cotton producer
can stand pat now for once and let
the other fellow draw new cards
and do the anteing. All the farmer
'need to do is to sit on the lid until
le is ready to rise.
The new schedule on the C. & G.
road will not make it any easier to
get away from Columbia, and that
is one of the main points.-Anderson
Mail.
Yes it will. You can .come out in
a Pullman car -and at Belton you can
take the trolley.
As stated in Friday's paper we had
a break in our Ainotype machine
which necessitated a little hand
composition. Our No. 2 machine has
not yet arrived.
The part was ordered by wire from
New Orleans and bill received Fri
day night. The express did not
4bring the part until Sunday after
noon. It. was left at Greenville for
twenty-four hours. Where one pays
extra carriage for prompt delivery
such carelessness as this is inex
cusable. Either carelessnesss on the
part of the railroad in not giving
time for transfer or indifference on
!the part of the express messenger. In
either event the rights of the cus
tomers are not considered.
But the package came Sunday af
ternoon and Capt. Langford was good
enough to deliver it promptly and at
lalf past five the machine was run
Ding. In order to get out today's pa
per on time it was necessary to work
Sunday night.
We have had a machine for five years
and this is the longest stop we have
ever had.

graph advising people to speak kind
ly of their neighbors. Does not even
the criminal law presume a man in
nocent until proven guilty? Is sim
ply an indictment in a Federal court
evidence of guilt? We do not know
even the facts in this case but in any
ease an indictment does not prove
guilt. We have known men indicted
for murder and other offenses and yet
they were acquitted. Mr. Carlisle's
friends are satisfied that when the
case comes on for trial he will com
pletely vindicate himself and show
conclusively thalt there has been no
criminal acts committed by him.
Senator Tillman is not alone in
the views he expresses in regard to
the lunoheon to President Taft in
Columbia. We have heard a great
many people give expression to the
same sentiment. Not that those who
are going or those who may not ae
eept ohjected to paying the price,
hut they felt that it was fixed large
enough to cover the cos:s of other
exoenses besides the hmeneon. We
received an invitation .but as we did
not feel that we could attenid we did
not reply as we understood a reply
to be expected only when the invita
'tion as accepted. And we have no
complaint.
If it is a State affair as claimed
'then it is the opinion of some that
th~e selecton of those to whom the
opportunity is given should not have
been left to a committee of the Co
lumbia chamber of commerce. But
there was no compulsion upon any
n oa<-eept the invitation with the

Mr. Taft stated somewhere that he
da- not object to being used asi an
atdraction to pull fairs out of the
hole.
In the eom!unilcation addressed to
to The Idler and signed Taxpayer, we
printed in Tuesday's paper a com
parison of the price at which the
bonds of Gaffney were sold and those
of Newberry. It should ,be
stated that the bonds of Gaffney
,bore interest at five per cent. while
it.he Newberry bonds bore interest at
four and a half per cent. The com
mission at Newberry had a bid of
$42,055 on a five per cent. bond,
making a premium of $2,055 for the
bonds at five per cent. A calculation
was made accurately and it was de
cided that to issue a four and a half
per cent. bond at $800 below par for
the entire issue would be a saving of
more than one thousand dollars to
the taxpayers, as against a five per
cent. bond issued at the premium of
$2,055.
So it may be seen that the New
berry bonds were really sold at a
better advantage to the taxpayer
than the Gaffney bonds. We men
tion this simply because Taxpayer
referred to it in his article.
All of the bids were .printed in
full at the time the ;bonds were sold.
The coming of the C., C. & 0. rail
road -to Spartanburg is not only a
great event for that progressive city
but is a great thing for South aCro
lina.

We have a good town. Let every

We are sorry that the Andersoa
Mail is not pleased with the new
schedule we are to have on the C. and
G. road. It is a decided improvement
over what we had and Anderson has
the same number of trains. The only
thing is the Anderson people who
want to go to Columbia will have to
get up a little earlier in the morning
bat then they will get to Columbia
earlier. We suspect the Mail had not
thought of that. Then there is that
afternoon train with a Pullman car.
What is the matter with that?
There was talk in New,berry not so
many mooons ago about building a
hospital. Like some other talk noth
ing has ever come of the talk. We
notice from the Anderson Mail that
the hospital at that place is to he
enlarged. They were building their
hospital about the time we were talk
ing aboat ours. It has been in oper
ation for some time and has been
found to be such a useful institution
that it is being enlarged. Have our
physicians and people given out the
idea of a hospital for Newberry? It
is scarcely for the reason that we do
not need one. We were on a train
going to Columbia not so long ago
and one physician on the same train
said he had at that time four patients
in the hospital in Columbia. It seems
to us that Newberry is large enough
to have a hospital and that it would
prove a great blessing to the suffering
if it were properly managed, and it
ould be.
Watch for the elephants
