COOK DOES NOT CARE. Says Peary's Map Only Proves That the Eskimos Carried Out Their Instructions. Cleveland, Ohio, Oct. 13.-"It is the same old story," said Dr. Cook, w?Ln. ne was !hzLwn the statement is sued ov commander Peary, togeth er with the map accompanying it. "I have replied to the points raised a dozen times," he cc. tinued. "The map published by Commander Peary in itself indicates tihat the Eskimos have respected their promise made to me that they would not give any information to Peary and his men. "The Eskimos were instructed not to tell Mr. Peary or any of his party, of our trip over the Polar Sea. They -were told to say that we had been far north. They have kept their word. "Mr. Whitney ihas said that during the cross examination conducted by Commander Peary and others of his expedition, the Eskimos did not un derstand the questions put to them or the map whici was laid before them. Their replies to the questionsl put have been twisted to suit a per verted interest. "4I will not enter into any argu ment about the matter. but I will bring the Eskimos to New York at my own expense, and they will prove as did Mr. Whitney, all that I have claimed." Dr. Cook would not consent to g'cr over the details contained in Mr. Peary'S statement any further thatt this. "The Eskimos," he said, "are only too willing to say something that they think will please their question erS.'' The explorer was not at all per turbed by the accusations. A confi dent smile flickered over this bronzed face when they were shown to him. "I fully expected to see something of the kind," he said. "The docu ment looks formidable over so many signatures, and will probably appear so to the public. There is, however, nothing ir it, as it is based upon the distorted and evasive replies of per sons who were told not to give any details."' The doctor continued: "Rasmussen. who will be .here shortly, has seen the Eskimos andl knows their real story. They did no try to deceive him. He will be with 'them for fourteen days. They know him and told him everything. He: speaks Eskimo himself and the peo ple have muoh confidence in him.'' He conclu,ded: "That is all I have to say now.'' The sale was by order of Fed eral Judge Pritchard, and resulted from the case of the International Trust Company, of Maryland, against) the Anderso. Traction Company. The Trust Company held first to .rtg'a ge on the properties. and was responsible for the matter being brought in the Federal courts. Mr. Roertson was a receiver of the corn pany, and held a second mortgage on the properties. AN ORDINANCE Ordering a Special Election of the Town of Newberry for the Purpose of Autihorizing $35,000 Sewer Ex tension Bonds and8$5,000 Water Exitension Bonds of the Town of Newberry. Whereas. a petition has been pre sented to the Mayor and Aldermen t the Town of Newberry. S. C.. in Tbe ' ma5~~lers'.n t'reehldler-. of 94 your han:):.b4lle bOdyI to cal of issuing $35.000 bonds for the exten sion of the existing sewer svstem and $5,000 bonds for the extension of t-he existing water works system, all such bonds to be the negotiable obligations of the Town of Newberry, payable forty years after date, with interest at not more than five per cent. per annum, payable annually or semi annually, said bonds to be issued in lieu of the issuance of $40,000 Water Extension and Sewer Extension bonds voted at the election of May 18, 1909." Whereas, it appears by affidavit of Win L. Buzhardt, Clerk and Treas urer of t.he said Town that said pe tition is signed by a majority of the freeholders of the Town of Newberry, S. C., as shown by its tax books; and, Whereas, Section 2021, Vol. 1, of Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1902, and acts amendatory thereof and sup plemental thereto declare that it shall be the duty of the municipal author ities of any incorporated city or town of this State, upon a petition of the majority of the free holders of said city or town, as shown by its tax books, to order h special election in any such city or town for the pur pose of issuing bonds for any corpor ate purpose set forth in said peti tion: Now, Therefore, Be It Ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the Town of Newberry, in the State of South (aaJo,ina, in council assembled and by authority of the same, that a spe cial election be and t-he same is here by ordered held at Council Chambers in said Town, the polls to be opened at 8 o'clock a. m. and to be closed at 4 o'clo-k p. m. on November 2nd., 1909, for the purpose of submitting to the electors of said town who are duly qualified for voting under the Constitution and laws of the State of South Carolina the questions whether said bonds sh41l be issued as prayed for in said petition. Those voting at said election who favor the issue of said water exten sion bonds shall cast a ballot upon which shall be printed or written the words "For the issue of water exten sion bonds," and those who oppose the issue of said water extension bonds shall cast a ballot upon which shall be printed or written the words 'MAgainst the issue of water exten sion bonds." Those voting at said election who favor the issue of said sewer exte-nsion bonds shall cast a ballot up~on which shall be printed or written the words "For the issue of sewer extension ,bonds'' and those who oppose the issue of said sewer extension bonds shall cast a ballot upon which shall be printed or writ ten the words "Against the issue of sewer extension bonds." .The following named persons are hereby appointed managers of said election: F.
