Mrs. Alfred Langdon Rives, of
Riehmond. Va.. died at her home,
Castle Hill, Albemarle County, on
Thursday, after a long illness. She
was the mother of Princess Troubet
skoy. the authoress. She was con
nected with some of the oldesf and
best ffmilies in the state and was
one of the most prominent women in
Virginia.
Adjt. Gen. Boyd suffered ano:her
,attaek of paralysis Wednesday after
moon. but was very much improved
Thursday afternoon and was able to
be up and about.
Owing to the illness of his son,
Secretary of War Dickinson, was de
qerred from accompanying President
Taft on his extensive trip. However,
news as been received that Mr.
Dickinson's son is improving, and
that Mr. Dickin5on will join the pres
ident at El Paso, on the 16th.
L. R. Livingston, an employee of
the Bell Telephone Company, was
killed in Greenville by falling from
the top of an electric pole on Main
street on Wednesday morning. A
fracture of the skull caused. immedi
ate death, and it is thought that he
touched a live wire while working
in among the net work of wires.
Ensign P. N. L. Bellinger, of Sou.th
Carolina, is signally honored in being
the first man from this State who is
to be ordered to duty on the fine new
lbatatle ship bearing that name. He
will probably go on her when she
goes to Charleston to receive her sil
ver service.
Greenwood is to have an automo
bile station. The lot ;has already been
purchased on which this garage. which
is to be the largest and best equipped
garage in the state, will be erected.
The new ,building and eqiupment will
cost around $10,000, and will be fit
ted up with the be>t appliances and
machinery for the repair and hand
ling of automobiles. Mr. Jdhn 1.

The Greensboro. N. C., Female Col
lege has received a gift of $25,000 from
!Carnegie.
Dr. Waightstill Avery, a dentist of~
Anderson, died on Wednesday.
David Haulbrooks, a boy of six
years. was killed at his farher's home
nor Walhalla, on Wednesday. He
wa shot in the breast. No one was
present, but his brother, aged eighbt,
heard the report of a gun. It is not
known whether the killing was acci
dental or a homicide.
Dr. J. T. Calvert, a prominent den
tist of Spartanb1irg, died on Wednes
day, after a brief illness.
Benjamin F. Fant, a ominent
merchant of Andersoni, died Wednes
day in a Greensboro Sanitarium, of
pellagra.
Judge Memminger imposed, a fine
of twent '-flve dollars on Juror J. D.
Perry, and a fine of ten dollars on
Mr. Perry 's clerk, C. M. Dorn.
Commander Peary has formally no

examine and pass upon the records
of his Polar, explorations. Dr. Cook
will submit duplicate copies oIf his
records simultaneously to American
scientists and to tihe Universi:y of
Copenhagen.
One hundred and twenty-nine years
ago on the seventh of this month,at a
memorable battle at King's~Mountain,.
the freedom of the United States was
won. At this spot on the sevent:h
there assembled a host of patrotic
men and women to witness the un
veiling of a shaft of granite t.o dedi
cate thiis shaft to the memory of those
whose blood was shed in the cause
that has given us the Governlment of
the United States. Dr. H. N. Snyder
delivered the address which was en
titled aThe Meaning and the Mes
sage.' and he brought out inl a (1ear

close with a sham battle participated
in bv seven companies, six from North
Carolina and one from this State.
Geo. W. Brown, a well-known farm
er of the Bend River neighborhood,
got entangled in the bands of his gin
nery on Friday and died from the in
juries sustained. He leaves a widow
and several children.
The Tennessee Synod held a ses
sion at St. Paul's church, on Hollow
Creek, and there was almost a unan
imous vote for the Lutheran Seminary
to be moved from Mount Pleasant to
the Piedmont section of the Carolinas.
Friday, for the first time Wilbur
Wright. drove Uncle Sam's Aero
plane. Miss Columbia, making suc
cessful flights ii a beautiful Mary
land valley. one time sailing over the
house built by Lord Baltimore two
centuries ago.
The Charleston Musical Festival, Oc
tober 25-30.
All preparations for the Musical
Festival are going on with accelerated
energy and speed as the time for this
great event approaches.
In the life of every community
there appears a time when in the
very air the approach of prosperity
and of new development may be felt
both by the residents and by casual
visitors. It is the unanimous and
firm conviction of every dweller in
the City by the Sea that this time is
now at hand. It seems that the hopes
so dearly cherished and so earnestly
pursued by hard and indefatigable'la
bor are about to be realized in glad
fruition. This sentiment has been
reflected in the zeal and vigor that is
being put into the Festival celebra
tion.
Charleston feels that she is invit
ing the whole State of South Caro
lina, of which she is the ocean gate
way. to join her at this <ritical turn
ing point in 'her career and rejoice
with her at the golden future that is
so clearly seen stretching ahead.
The musical features of the Festi
val are such that were the cost of the
tickets relied upon to defray the ex
penses. it would not be possible to
place the price of tickets for each
performanee at less than $5.00.
But it has been the desire of this
Festival Association to give to the
visifors who may come don an en
tertainment of the highest possible
grade at a cost that is absolutely
nominal, and so a pri-ee has been fixed
for the concerts that is practically
the same as free admission, the price
of the tickets merely sufficing to con
fine the audience to those who will
be able to appreciate the magnificent
performances.
The soloists, Marian Van Duyn,
Mrs. Kahler, and Mr. Chas. Darby
shire have won for themselves a rep
utation. in every large city within six
hundred miles of New York. Mr.
Pilsner. the Violin Soloist, is regard
ed as pssssig a certainty of tech
nique and a richness and flexibility
of expression that is equalled by very
few Artists in America.
