At Governor's Request Official Who
Held Inquest Recites Steps Taken
to Clear Gilcrease Homicide.

received by Governor Ansel this morn
ing from Magistrate James Rogers,
who held the inquest over Gus Gil
crease:
Dear Governor: Your telegram of
the 27th came promptly to hand. also
y;our letter of the 28th. You ask for
a full report of the case, and my act
ings and doings in the matter.
On last Saturday morning. Septem
ber 25, Dr. .John Lawrence reported .to
me that he had been called to see a
negro near Dyson 's, Gus Gilerease by
name, and t'hat the negro was dead
and that I would probably be called to
hold an inquest. Soon after two men
came to my office and signed a request
for me to hol this inquest. I imme
diately dispatched my constable to
Dyson to summon a jury. I followed
soon after, and as soon as the jury
could be gotten together proceeded.
We got all the testimony it was pos
sible to get and the jury returne-i a
verdict that the deceased "eams to
:his death by means unknown to the
jury.'' and that at the time of his
death 'was suffering from -'' and
.apparently "had beeni severely flog
ged."' I had thirteen white men and
one negro on the jury. all men who
lived in and around Dyson. No one
was ebarged with the crime. Every
body seemed to have an idea of how
it was done and who done it. I mean
trhe killing, if a killing it was.
On Monday morning I heard by ae
eident that a certain negro, Rob Rob
ertson by name, who had .iestified be
fore the jury of inquest, wanted to be
re-examined. I sent my constable to
Dyson and brought him up. He testi
fied as follows: First, that he had
sworn falsely at the inquest: second.
that his life hed been threatened, and
that he was present when Henry R.
Williamson, Sloan Williamson. Ashby
King and Sam M. Cooper had severe

jury and the sheriff and issued a war
rant, and the four men are now in the
county jail charged with feloniously
