The editor of The Herald and News received telegrams on Wednes day morning, conveying the sad in telligence of the .death of his life Jomg friend, Ex-Governor M. B. Me Sweeney. Gov. MeSweeney had been in bad health for several months, and for two months was in a !hospital in Bal timore, where he died. We are writing this simple an .nouncement just before leaving to at ead his funeral at his home in Hamp -ion, S. C. I Gov. MeSweeney was big hearted and generous, a friend to every body, and everybody's friend. He was a typical American, a self ma,3, man in every sense of the word. We knew him possibly better than any other outside his own family. We have seen him in all the relations of life and he was the same kind heart ed gentleman at all times. True to his friends, kind and indulgent to his family. He was a self-made man, and a true and tried friend. In a subsequent is sue we hope to say something more of his life and service, and to pay our feeble tribute to his memory. He was our friend for many years, and for four years we lived with his family as a member of it, and for all of them we feel the same as if they were our own blood, and our :deepest iympat'hy goes out to them in this hour of their sad bereavement. The Automobile Club of Greenville, is going to have a good roads rally at *Greenville on October 15, and expects to extend invitations to automobile soxwners of the automobile highway between Greenville and Columbia. The purpose, as we understand, is to get the owners along this line inter ested in the building of the road be * tween Columbia and Greenville. Every automobile owner ought to take an active interest in this work, and we should think every citizen who lives aldng the road especially should ~be interested, because if a good road is built which is good for automobiles, it will also be good for rwagons and buggies. We hope that a full delegation from Newberry vill attend the meet ing. 'We would like to ask Mr. J. A. Brock, of Anderson, if he has ever appointed the committee, which he was authorized to appoint, by -the meeting at Greenville, in the inter est of better schedule on the Colum bia and Greenville division of the Sout.hern Railway. As we understand the action of this meeting in Green ville, this committee was to be ap pointed by the chairman and they were to confer with the officials and agree upon something that would be eatisfactory to the patrons and that e ould be agreed upon by the -officials. Mr. Henry Samuels, who was one of the star witnesses in the Farnum bribery case. in Columbia, last week, is also Mayor of Chester. The citi zens of Chester have been very much excited over the matter since his con fession in tis case, but lie says that he will not resign the oflice of Mayor. but will serve his term out. He has resigned, however. the pres. idenev of toe board of the Building~ and Loan Association. Arrangements have been made by The Herald and News with Mr. J. .Perry Cook to solicit and collect from subscribers in West End, and papers will be delivered at the homes of all -subscriptions obtainedl by Mr'.
