CHEER GEN. G NT'S SON.
Frenzied Welcome to en. Frederick
D. Grant.--Survivors in Great
Parade.
Memphis, Tenn., June 10.-A fren
zied demonstration of welcome by the
men in grav for the son of the man
who conquered them marked the final
scene of the 19th reunion of the
United Confederate Veterans today.
It took place during the parade. In
the reviewing stand stood Gen. Fred- I
erick Dent Grant of the United States
army. The first few divisions in line
passed with oniy a limited number
recognizing the son of the man who
accepted the sarrender of Lee. But
fa cavalry; division approached,
d its commander, Gen. Tyler of
Hickman. Ky.. old and grizzled, peer
ed steadily at Uen. Grant a moment.
Then ghe turned in his saddle and
Yelled: -G
"Come on, you kids, here's Gen.
Grant come to life again in his son.'"
With one of the old time rebel yells
the division-retnant of Forrest's
cavalry-eharged upon the stand,
jostling one another for an opportun
itv to shake the hand of the son of
their old tinie enemy. From that mo
ment every gray clad veteran whoi
could reach the stand rushed up to
shake' hands with Gen. Grant. The
stocky army officer's cold gray eyes
filled with tears and his shoulders
shook with emoti, a as he murmured,
"God bless you .i1, boys, God bless
you all,'" giving each a cordial hand
grasp.
Battle-torn banners were grouped
at his feet and waved over his head
in salute. One old officer rode up to
the stand, seized Geu. Grant's hand (
and kissed him on the cheek, exclaim- I
ing. "God bless you, boy, I fought;
your father, of whom you are the
image, but he was a gallant, magnan
imous foe, and I love his son." i
More than one veteran was in tears
as he saw the famous federal chief
tain's son so touched by the recep
tion. It is doubtful if any other
Northern man. even a president, ever
received such an ovation as that
