For several years The Herald and News ihas ,been sending tihe News and Courier in connection with The Her old and News for $2.00. The weekly News -and Courier is printed on Wednesday and Saturday. The first of this year the weekly News and Courier ipcreased its price to seventy-five cents, making the two papers $2.25. The weekly News and Courier, however, has offered in ad iition to the paper to send a copy of the Home and Farm for one year and a pair of eight inch steel adjus table tension shears, making The Herald and News, the News and Cour ier, the Home and Farm, and the shears all for $2.25. This price will be given for old as well as new sub seribers during the month of May. In order to take advantage of this offer you must subscribe for one year or pay one year's subqeription to The Herald and News and News and Courier. The Herald and News has never caxed much about a clubbing arrange ment because as a rule it has never been satisfactory. This, 'however, is an extraordinary offer, the shears alone being worth seventy-five cents. The weekly News and Courier is printed twice a week, on Wednesday and Saturday, The Herald and News twice a week on Tuesday and Friday and the Home and Farms is thrown, in with these. The Herald and News has made ar rangements with Mr. W. E. Lawson, an experienced newspaper man, to canvass the county for subscribers. Any courtesy extended him will be ~appreciated. During April we did not have op poirtunity to correct our mailing gal leys as promptly as we should and as a result a few subscribers received The paper whose time expired on th~e first. The list was corrected up to date :on .Saturday, and those who fail ed to pay in April were taken off. We ~hated to .do this and it will take 'us some time to get accustomed to it but we are marking no exceptions. Those -whose time expired on the first of this month will be notified today and if not -renewed this week will be 'taken off on Satu-rday. We shall regret to do this but we give you ten days. Please attend to it this rweek. The story by Col. Dickert, "A Dance with Death,'' will run in the paper every Ta'esday until comnplet ed. Tihose who came and secured copies of the first instalment had better subscribe if they desire the reminsning chapters. We cannot fur nish free copies to those who are not subscribers. Of course, we know a great many who are not subscribers are reading borrowed papers. We do niot object to that, but it will be much !more satisfactory to you to have the paiper sent direet. A man mutst feel mighty bad, who, .to save the paltry cost of a county paper, will borrow his neighbbor 's. IT DEPENDS. We find the following in a recent issue of the Columbia State: A WARNING TO MANN. "Doth He Not Consider From Whence Cometh His Job?" You should remember that Mr. Mann also holds a seat in the legislature of South Carolina and in violation of the State constitutionl and the man who is smart enough to do that need not cons5ider. HIe doesn't have to. We understand that lie is thinking serio'usly of adding other fethers to his cap. THE IDLER. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I wonder if Mr. President Sligh, of the Good Roads league, has read in the papers the proposition to build a great big highway from New York to Florida. And they say it is going by Charlotte and Anderson and to Atlanta. Now suppose you look at the map and see if we could not get in this line. From Charlotte to At lanta Newberry would be in it. -0 Talking about roads I think that the convicts in the penitentiary ought to be put on permanent road work and the farms ought to be sold or just a sufficiently large farm kept to supply provisions. -0 There are about one thousand con victs in the penitentiary. That num ber of able bodied men stretched out on the public roads would soon build two or three aeross the entire State. It is the thing to do. What do you think of it, Mr. President Sligh ? There is talk of a road to connect Beaufort and Savannah, and I be lieve steps are being taken to build a road between Columbia and Cam &6n. The time is at hand when we must do something. We must bave better roads and the thing is to get the work started in the right direc tion. -o You know this would be a beauti ful town at this season especially if our streets and sidewalks were only 1 in a little better looking condition. Have you seen the ditches and the weeds and the trash and the gulleys? Well. I believe those in charge are doing the best they can and "angels could do no more" but they need, help. Need the help of every citi zen and every property owner. Just a little help and a little cooperation and not so much kicking and fault finding and how beautiful everything would move. -0 "There are those who use the hold back more than the collar." Had you ever thought of this before? Wonder if Newberry has any such horses or mules? Those who are al ays pulling back ? What we need now is everybody to draw hard on the .collar and a pull altogether. Oh, yes, Greenville 'has a few peo ple who are willing to give away ad vice free of charge and without solici tation. But it isn't their fault. I thoughit it might be fitting to quote the above parapraph from the Greenville News in this connection. No, no, there is no one in Newberry to give away advice. HUNT, notice that Aiken, South Carolina, has plans already definitely under way to build a boulevard from Au gusta to Aiken. I suppose this means a road. The distance is something like 25 miles. The Augusta Ohronicle ays, "A mile or two of modern boulevard, once built and in opera tion, would soon lead to the building of many more miles." That is what I have always believed about public oads. A mile or two once built, means many more miles. Lets build the first mile or two right now. -0 By the* way, I wonder what ~has ecome of that experiment of a mile f good road by an expert from the overnment. Can and will Mr. Su ervisor Feagle tell us? -0 Talking about 'the school building and the location thlere is *a pretty -igh knoll between Harper street nd Harrington in rear of the resi dence of Mrs. Carwile and Mr. H. I. Abrams. I don't know who owns the lot. The board is not obliged to ake a lot simply because it is of fered. This town is growing. The Idler strolled out a little the other day when the -weather was not so hot and [ had,. to inquire along just like a stranger. The new houses and more going up. And ''Eastward, the ourse of empire seems to be taking it way.'' Tese things should be onsidered by the board. Have you noticed how fast the shade trees rlanted in the new town along Ma.yei oulevard a'nd the others are grow. ing. It is marvelous. --- There is one thing that has beer wonderful to me. I 'have not heard a word of complaint of the site selee.t ed by the government for the new post office building. Th-is ought tc be an encouragement to the govern. ment to put up the building for New. berry at once. May it be so. -0 I notice .they are still talking aboul the trouble at Clemson. Well, i1 does look like Clemson is having i lot of trouble but iher income and hei expenses go on like Tennyson ' brook. Theare is no end. --- As I have remarked before abou' other matters I don't know anythin about the trouble at Clemson, there fore, I have *a perfect right to ex press an opinion. The opinion mal not be worth any more than m3 knowledge but that doesn 't matter. -o Clemson was born in a politica 'revolution and has not been able t( get rid of 'her birth marks.
