BREAKS RECORD.
American Aviator Remains Aloft
Nearly Two Hours-Soars in a
Strong Breeze.
Lemans, France, Dec. 18.-Wilbur
Wright, the American aeroplanist, es
tablished a new world's record for
heavier-than-air machines today,
while trying for the Michelin cup, re
maining in the air 1 hour, 53 minutes
and 59 seconds. The best previous
record is one hour, 31 minutes and 51
seconds, which Mr. Wright made Oc
toler 10.
The aeronaut attained an average
height of 24 feet today and the dis
tance was officially measured at 61 1-2
miles, which does not include the wide
sweeps and turns during the flight.
He descended only because the oil
feeder got out of order.
Mr. Wright closed a triumphant
day by achieving another record, fly
ing to a height of 360 feet in a strong
wind and winning the Sarthe AeroI
club's prize for height. At first it
was thought that the violence of the
breeze wov". compel Mr. Wright to
postpone his efforts but undaunted
his machine and circled around and
around the field. When soaring at
90 feet a sudden gust of wind caught
the areoplane sidewsie, causing it to
plunge violently backwards. The
spectators were terrified but Mr.
Wright remained unperturbed and
soon righted his craft.
At the end of 10 minutes the wind
had moderated and the -aeroplane
soared upward and passed high. over a
line of captive balloons marking a dis
tance of 300 feet. Then it deseeiael
and after again circling the f'eld was
brought to earth, landing in front of
the.shed in which it is housed.
!Me Area club tonight gave a ban
quet to Mr. Wright in consideration
of his victory of today.

Confederate Veterans in all parts of
Southa Carolina will be interested to
know that orders have been received
placing Gen. Zimmerman Davis, of
this city, in command of th'e United
Confederate Veterans in this State,
succeeding Gen. Thomas Carwile, who
died Tast week at Edgefield. Gen.
Davis has received this telegram:
"Brig. Gen. Zimmerman .Davis,
Charleston, S. C.:

There was no braver soldier in the
rifederate army than Gen. Davis,

I. It is with great regret that the

upbuilding of his beloved State, sarv
ing her in peace as devotedly and
faithfully as in war. He was devot
ed to the cause in which for four
years he willingly risked his life, and
ever felt and knew that it was the
cause of "truth, justice and the Con
stitution," and that the principles for
which he contended would live for
ever in the hearts of a loyal people.
He loved the Southland, he loved all
his comrades, who had shared with
him the hardships and failures, the
successes and the glories of the great
struggle for constitutional liberty. He
was always present at the reunions
of those who wore the gray, whether
in his own or other States of the
South, and was ever one of the lead
ing spirits in their deliberations. In
his death the State has lost a useful
citizen, while, we his comrades in
arms, are bereft of a true and loyal
friend.
II. All members of camps in this
Division will wear the usual badge of
mourning on all public occasions until
the next annual State reunion, as a
tribute of respect to his memory.
III. In obedience to special Orders
No. 10 from headquarters, United
Confederate Veterans, the undersign
ed hereby'assumes command of this
Division.
IV. Col. U. R. Brooks, command
ing the Richland regiment, the senior
officer of the brigade, is hereby plac
ed in command of the 1st brigade.
V. Members of the Division staff
and of the staff of the 1st brigade
are requested to retain their respec
tive position until further orders.
