We are very much gratified that eitv council has decided to extend the laying of vitrified brick in Caldwell street across Friend street to tha post office. and we are confident that this action of council will be heartily a,0 proved/and commended by the people of Newberry. The thoroughfare from Main street to the post office is one of the most important and one of the most generally used in the city. The Aerald and News will publish its issue of December 25 on Wednes day night. December 23. In accord ance with our custom for a number of yeai-s past, we will omit one issue Christmas week, the next issue after next Wednesday night appearing on Friday, January 1. We would ap preciate it if advertisers and cor respondents would bear this in mind. The salary of the mayor has been increased from four hundred dollars to six hundred dollars per year. Cities smaller than Newberry in this State have for some years been paying their chief erecutives at least six hundred dollars a year, and Newberry can cer tainly afford to pay its mayor this amount. "The Dark Corner," by Za6h Mc Ghee, the talented and versatile Washington correspondent, is a well written story. The style is excellent, and the plot holds the interest of the reader throughout. It is a South Car olina novel, and for that reason is all the more nteresting to South Car olinian3. We are glad to say, however, that no longer in this sction of South CArolina is there a "dark corner'' of the charaeter which Mr. McGhee de picts. It is true, however, that in nearly every section of the South the right kind of education is held too Aheap, and that more . education true education of mind and heart is one of the South's most pressing needs. Mr. McGhee 's book will repay a earfd reading, and we predict for it araysale. SCOURT HOUSE PARK. Some time ago thre Civic association had a landscape gardener to lay ofi and suggest an arrangement for the park around the new court house. This work was to have been done by Mr. Wieker, the present supervis or, and the plans and specifications were explained to him in detail. Ow ing to the great amount of work nec ~essary upon the bridges ineident to the freshets, Mr. Wicker has been un able to pu+ t.he chain gang on this work; therefore, it has not been done. Mr. Wicker go'es out of office ear ly in January and iif it is impossible for him to have the wor odne eoerkf for him to have the work done before that time he will no doubt turn over the plans and explain them to his successor, and it is hoped that Mr. Feagle will lose no time in doing something for the square around the new court house. There should be some walks made and grass planted, and the driving across the side walk and into the court house lot should be stopped. GROWING CELERY. The South is fast beginning to rea lizie that its soil is adapted to the cul tivation of many products whieh our ancestors ,thought were necessarily imported luxuries. Dr. W. G. Houseal has proven this by the luxuriant and delicious celery hie has this season grown in his gar den. The doctor left two bunches of this celery in The Herald and News office yesterday that were simply sup erb. One- was the Paris Rose Rib~ variety, the other the famous White Plume variety, and this editor, who considers himself somewhat of a con noisseur in the celery line! ean say that it was as fine as any imported Kalamazoo celery he has ever seen. It is crisp and juicy and possesses a fine flavor. Dr. Houseal has quite a gaanity of this celery in his garden, and it was raised w:'ithout any more extra cars than any other fine vegetable couli be raised. He will be pleased to tel any one who desires to know, his plar and method of raising this celery.
