CASH IN ADVANCE. C
In 'MarIi. 18S7. T heeuc a part
owner ol The 1erald and News andl
have been connected with the papet
-ontinuously since that time. I was b
-with the paper a couple of years prior p
to that time when under other own- n
ership. I have, therefore, been the t
editor for nearly twenty-five years.
Daring that time my duties have al- s
so been to keep the books and sub- 1
scription accounts. a
I have always had great faith and in
confidence in the honesty of the peo- V
ple and their purpose to pay their %
debts. For that reason I have never it
believed I could conduct a strictly p
eash in advance substription.
For the past few months I have a
been giving a closer study to the sit- e,
nation than ever before.
When the postoffice department is- p
sued its order that a subscription to s
a semi-weekly more than nine months
in arrears could not' be accepted at t<
the second-class rate we endeavored h
to comply with the order ana had to p
eutt off about 650 names. We first n
sent each subscriber at least two let- a
ters calling attention to the ruling be- p
sides mention of it was made in the a
paper. This faH we have sent an
other letter to these persons but we r,
have received no response. N
These 650 owed- us over $5,000. a
Many of them not only did not pay
what they owel but weni directly and I
subseribed f. o-r coLemporary and il
paid for it. We have no objection to
that but we mention it as a reason
for the shaking of our faith in the
honesty of the people. It certainly
was a striking evidence of ingratitude.
We still have a good many sub- e
scribers who are in arrears. State- a
ments have been sent or will be sent e
in a few days to all of these.
-During the 25 years of our connee- e
tion with this newspaper we have
lost in unpaid subscriptions at least e
$20,000. We have no one to blame a
but ourself and the people would t]
'have though~t more of us if we had tV
made them pay it. We are not com- n
plaining but we propose to stop this p
leak or go out of the business. c
After the first day of February The e
Herald and News will be run strictly s
on the cash in adv~ance plan. A post f
.card will be mailed you giving you tl
thirty days notice so that you may t
- have time to send in your renewal n
and to remind you if you should over- e
look it. li
There are doubtless some errors in
the credits. If you will call our at- n
tention to these we will gladly make t]
the correction and in every case w.ill f:
give the subscriber the benefit of the t<
doubt. Ii:
It takes too much of our time to p
send statements and to pay postage. a
We will keep no books except our t<
receipt stubs and e eash book and the p
mailing galleys. s<
We shall hate to part with any sub-A
scribers buit we cannot longer be an
