During the recent term of the com
mon pleas court for Newberry county
we took occasion to comment upon
the fairness and impartiality of Judge
Memminger, and the manner in which
he dispatched business as rapidly as
was consistent with a proper adminis
tration of justice. During the crimi
nal court which adjournad on Wed
nesday afternoon-a court which was
confronted with the largest criminal
docket which Newberry county has
furnished in a number of years-the
work was disposed of in remarkably
short time, and the result of the court
will have a marked effect in the in
terest of law and ord'er in Newberry
county. Judge Memminger has made
a record in Newberry county which
will have a lasting influence in the
suppression of crime. Judge Meni
minger, in the opinion of the people
of Newberry county, is a most excel
lent judge.
The new court house grounds
should be planted in grass and walks
laid out and paved. The driving of
wagons on the grounds and the hitch
ing of horses there should be prohibit
ed. The wagon road by the Crotwell
IIotel should be closed.
We hope the Civic Association will
get busy and keep behind the city
fathers until our streets are put in
better condition and our public square
is turned into a park and the wagon
yard is removed.
A wagon yard should be provided
and it should have a shelter and
a watering place. These things can
be had if we will to have them.
The public square should not be
used for a wagon yard. We
are sure the ladies of the Civic Asso
ciation can do something if they will.
The State Board of Canvasserz
Save sustained the validity of the dis
-ensary election recently held in
Laurens county. The majority was
too large to have done otherwise even
if there had been ~technical irrgulari
ties. The wish of a majority of the
electors was the purpose of the elec
tion and that will was decidedly in
favor of prohibition.
There should be another arc light
in College street In front of the Cr&t
well Hotel. There is no light on this
7sre'et from Scott's creek to Boundary
street. A light in front of the Crot
well would furnish light around the
court house lot and up the street to
the public square. Any one who
doubts the need of such a light should
go to the court house some dark nighit.
The criminal court which has been
in session for the past two w eek3 has
made good progress with the heavy
docket. The convictions have been
many, though none of the hontie Cde
cases have resulted in straight ver
dicts of guilty.
One is impressed on hearing the
testimony of the witnesses in the
homicide cases with' the fact that t:ae
negroes have little regard for taking
the 4Nie.-f their fellows. It does not
eem to desturb them in the least. In
most of the homicides they have grown
out of trivial differences and in some
cases there seemed to be no provoca
tion whatever.
-Another fact developd is that it is
almost a universal practice with the
negroes to carry pistols.
These homicide cases,have not been
the result of drunkenness but rather
resulted from the pistol habit and gam
bling.
The pistol is a greater menace to the
negro than whiskey. It should be
abolished.
