ASSEMBLY EELECTS 8 JUDGES.! General Assembly Just Chosen Will Also Elect Senator, Superintend ent of Penitentiary, State Librarian, Insurance Commissioner and Other Offices. News and Courier. Columbia, November 19.-The gen eral ass6mbly, which has just been chosen, will elect judges for eight out of the twelve circuits, and will also elect one member of the supreme court. Three of the eight circuit judges will be chosen at the frist ses sion. 1909. and five at the second session, 1910. The associate justice to be elec,-d will be chosen at the second session. The circuit judges to be elected at the first session are those of the 7th, 9th and 10th circuits. The term of Judge D. E. Hydrick, of Spartanburg, judge of the 7th circuit, expires on December 15. 1909. The term of Judae R. Withers Memminger, of Charleston. judge of the 9th circuit, expires on February 17, 1909, and that of Judge George E. Prince, of *Anderson, judge of the 10th eircuit, expires on the same date. The sue cessors of Judges Hydrick, Memmin ger and Prince will be chosen at the coming session of the general assem bly, and there is no intimation that either of them will have opposition, as they are among the most able. cap able and vigorous members of the State judiciary. Judges Hydrick and Memminger are serving their first! ,term and Judge Prince his second. The judges wh'ose terms expire in 1910 and whose successors wl-l be chosen by the general assembly in 1910 are thethe judges of the 2d, 3d. 4th, 6thI and 8th circuits. Their terms expire as follows: Judge Robert Aldrich. of I Barnwell, 2d circuit. February 16, 1910; Judge R. C. Watts, of Chera'%, 4th circuit. February 14, 1910; Judge John S. Wilson, of Manning, 3d cir cuit. Deeember 6th, 1910; Judge Gee. W. Gage, of Chester, 6th circuit, Feb ruary 15, 1910; Judge J. C. Klugh, of Abbeville, 8th circuit, December 22, 1910. Judge Robert Aldrich was eleeted at the last session to fill the unexpired term of Judge James Ald rich, resigned, and Judge John S. Wil son was elected at the 1907 session to fill the unexpired term of Judge R. 0. Purdy, resigned. The -term of a circuit judge is four years. To Elect Associate Justice. 'The term of Associate Justice Ira B. Jones, of Lancaster, expires on July 31. 1910, and his successor will be elected at the session of 1910. Justice Jones, who was formerly speaker of the house, is now serving his second term of eight years, and he has made a marked impression by his able and thorough opinions. To Elect a Senator. In addition to the election' of jud ges, the general assembly at its com ing session will, of course, elect a senator to represent this State in the United States senate. The choice of the people has already been made and the eleetion of the Hon. E. D. Smith. of Florence. is a mere formality. He will succeed the Hon. Frank B. Gar'. of Abbeville, elected at the 1908 ses sion to fill the unexpired term of the Hon. A. C. Latimer, deceased. Penitentiary Board. . The termrs of three members of the board of directors of the State peni tentiary expire in 1909 and their suc essors will be chosen at the coming~ session. The members whose terms expire are Jasper M. Smith, of Smoak. J. G. Mobley, of' Fairfield, and A. K. Sanders, of Sumter. It is presumed that all of these gentlemen will be aspirants to succeed them selves. The name of the Hon. J. Bet ton Watson. of Anderson, has already been suggested for one of these places, and it is understood that Mr. Watson will be a candidate. He is orne of the most extensive and successful far mers of the Piedmont and a man of exellent business ability, who has had experience in matters pertaining to the b)usiness of the State prison. The terms of the other two mem bers of the board, Messrs. B. F. Thome as, of Barnwell, and D. B. Peurifoy, of Saluda, expire in 1910, the term being two years. Trustees Don't Quality. The terms of a number of the trus tees of the State colleges will also ex pire within the next two years. and some of them will be chosen at the coming session, but nearly all the trus tees disregard the law and fail to sake out commissions as required by the constitution, and it is impossible, without an examination of the jour nals of the general assembly. to tell hw many or which of the trustees' A Popular Man. The ge !mb a he ses :41n (f -1909 will eleet the superin Lteideni of the State peintentiary, the term 1Of the incumbent. Capt. D. J. Griffith, expiring March 19. 1909. Capt. Griffith has held the position since 1899 and is likely to hold it as long as he desires. The term is two years and he is serving his fifth A Popular Woman. The general assembly in 1910 will elect the State librarian for a term of two years. The incumbent. Miss L. CI H. Laborde, has held the position for S, seven years, having first been ap pointed by Governor McSweeney to h fill a vacancy created by resignation and she is invincible with the general t assembly. The insurance commissioner, an of fice created by the last. general as sembly. will be chosen in 1910, the term being for two years. The job is too young to speenlate upon. but the Hon. F. H. McMaster is holding it down with eminent satisfaction thus far. DE It would not be surprising if the DE number of justices of the supreme 16 court is increased within the next two years, and in that case there will be 50 other elections. There are not likely 60 to be any changes within the two 60 years in the circuits. Allowing for 25 resignations. which are few. and death.s, whic-h are not so rare. there may be other offices to be filled by the general asenbly that is just going - into office. C1 CONVIOTE:D OF SELLING LIQUOR Col. Aaron Thorison Given Haavy B Sentence. News and Courier. Spartanburg. November 20.--The heaviest sentence ever imposed i:n this county for conviction on the charge of - selling liquor was that today imposed by Judge Klugh on Col Aaron Thomp son, of this county. who was convicted 60 on three counts. He was given a fine of $1,500 or eighteen months in the 60 penitentiary or hard labor on the pub- 0 lie works of the county. The case will 4 be appealed. Motion was made for new trial, but was refused by the 25 ourt. 30 40 A BALD-HEADED WOMAN. 50 Shorn of Her Crown of Beauty Loses In Love and Marriage. Sh -- Cu Hair is certainly most necessary to El woman. Who could love and marry a bald headed woman? What charms 1 could one array to offset such a dis figurement? A woman's goal is usually love and 6 marriage. Her crowning glory is her 1 hair. The loss of her hair mars her 25 beauty, happiness and success. Yet, 15 right here in Newberry, there are thousands of women who are neglect- 6 ing or injuring their hair to such an extent that it is only a matter of time when it will be utterly ruined. 25 Many women destroy the beauty of 2 their hair through thoughtlessness or ignorance of certain facts. They use 15 crling irons over-heated, or to ex-'3 eess, which destroys the natural oli of the hair, causing it to split, break and come out. They do not shanipoo their hair often enough, or too often. They use soaps or preparations which contain ingredients positively' harm- i ful to the scalp and hair. As a result of such treatment. dand ruff is createt, the hair loosens, loses color, falls out. and baldness corn- A mences, unless proper and prompt pre cautions are taken in time.
