E. H. AULL, EDITOR. Entered at the Postoffice at New berry, S. C., as 2nd class matter. Tuesday, November 17, 1908. The Killina of Mr. E. W. Ciac ~11la ek~ was a most deplorable affair. He wNa-; a brilliant man and in the prime of young manhood. That beint :rue his tragic taking off is. all the more de plorable. It should !,ot be forgotten, however. in deploring the street d,te: that Mr. Carmack was also armed with a deadly pistol and that lie tried to kill his antagonist. 'The tendency with some editors is too much towards thC abuse of me:i whom they oppose. The liberty ot the press, which should always he held inviolate should not be abused. as it too often is. In the heat of de bate and of political campaigns we too often see men attacked unjustly and wrongly in the effort to comp1hss -their defeat. We do not know that this was the ease in Tiwe:ee but the press sometimes,. it seems to us, misconstrues liberty t0' me.n lieense. The U. D. C. convention recently held in Atlanta passed a resolution making wives of Southern men eligi ble to membership though the wives may be daughters of Federal soldiers. This action destroys the organization. We thought the badge neeeszary to membership in the U. D. C. was that some ancestor was a legitimate and real soldier in the Confederacy or hqd seen service in the cause of the Confederaev. By this action mem bers may be made and daughters created by a written resolution. That. however. does not make them daugh ters of the Confederacy, except in name. We publish in full the remarks of Judge Sehumpert at Spartanburg in regard to the militia. We think Judge Sehumpert did the proper thing. It was no reflection on the militia. They were simply doing their duty but to put it up to the people of the county -4heir patriotism-to maintain the good order and digrnity of the co.4rt- - they could not do otherwise. It would seem from the report of sales i-n the county dispensaries for October that the practice of prohibi tion is not growing in South Carolina. One half the counties are selling more whiskey thain the whole State sold under the old State dispensary. It is unfortunate that there should be a fever scare at Winthrop college. The wise thing for the board to have done when the fever broke out would have been to close the school until the first .of January and< if necessary extended the session next i S spring a few weeks longer. This would have given opportunity to in-< vestigate thoroughly all probable ori possible causes of infection. About half the gikls have gone I home and t'hose that are left at the c ollege hiad as well be home for the I good they aedoing intheir studies. c It is impossible to get work out of I pupils that will be at all satisfactory I under conditions at Winthrop. 'We are glad. however, to note that I no new eases are reported and 'that ' none h.ave terminated fatally.r The committee appointed to look into school conditions in Newberry and submit report has done its work. The report is published. Two plans ~ are submitted. Either one can be ear ried out without an increase of taxes. c Even if taxes 'have to be increased ~ something should be done. The report is concise and gives full information .as :to present condi tions. The plan to erect two buildings in different parts of the city-one for high school and one for lower grades -seems to be the favorite with the committtee. It would be better to have the high school department in a sep arate building. The present facilities as pointed out by the committee were only adequate nearly :twenty years ago and in that time the city has more than doubled in population and we have neglectea our schools. This :should not be per mitted longer to be the case. Our whole system needs reorganiz ing. There should be a principal with a living salary and the salary of the superintendent should be increas ed to $1500 and the :teachers should have not less than $50 .to $60 pei * month and then we should ha.ve and 'I could command effcient and traine<t I teachers wvho should be elected on I their merit.s and for no other reason. The people.are ready to furnish the 'I facilities and if the committee will submit either plan 'to the people the peonle .wil approve it.. She came and talkrl and ur association was organized. We would suggest that the Civic ~ssociation of Newberry now send a. legation to Anderson and that the ayor and two or three aldermen go ong and take a picture of the An rson publi,e square and see how it skept and then come back and look tour public squ*are and take a pie tre of it. The Anderson public * uare was a worse lookijng object an ours before the hdies took hold f it. That is if it is possible for a iblic square to be more unattractive an ours. Ours is now a ~wagon rd and a standing and resting place r hacks and could scarcely be made >r'se in appearance. Andergon 's is w a beautiful and attractive park, d is ne.atly kept.
