Meeting of Laymen Yesterday Afternoon?About 100 Delegates Have Arrived. Kach train sinee Tuesday evening lias brought delegates and they have not all come in yet. On Wednesday afternoon there was a devotional and business meeting of the laymen who had come in at that time, and on Wednesday evening a layman's meeting was again held, when Hew James 11 ressley, preached a very strong sermon before the body, and outlined the movement and the motive o| the laymen's meeting. Mr. 11oss, a layman from Charlotte, X. ('., also made some very interesting remarks on the nature of this work, and others spoke concerning it. The laymen's movement is perhapi* I lie greatest step forward that the churches of all denominations have taken in recent years, and it has been received enthusiastically by the high ollicials in the churches as well as given a hearty support by most of be laity. It is. as it should be, in thorough sympathy with the purpose of the church, which is to see that Christ's kingdom is extended to the j ends of the world and His gospel preached unto all creatues, and that the world be brought to the feet of the Savior. Kev. S. .1. Patterson of Monticcllo, Ark., will preach at eleven o'clock. In the afternoon there will be a devotional service, conducted by Kev. .1. M W bite, ot Lancaster, and a business session beginning at three o'clock; and the evening service will be devoted to the subject of Home Missions and the sermon will be preached by Kev. R. K. Hough, of Charlotte, X. ('. The weather continues delightful for the meeting of Synod, and the hearts and homes of the people are open to the city's guests, and it is to be hoped that there will be not only a most successful meeting of -this distinguished body but that each one will leave the city feeling that if was good to have been here, and that an invitation from Newberry would always be welcomed news among them.
