IMPORTANT NOTICE.
Some months ago we published the
ruling of the post office department
as to delinquent subscriptions and in
conformity with it were forced to take
from our list a number of subscrib
ers. Some of these have paid up and
renewed. A great many have not.
We have not adopted the strictly
cash in advance rule. We have en
deavored to send every one who is in
arrears a statement. This is to give
notice that all who are not paid up to
1908, on the first of November will
be taken from our list.
The ruling says we cannot have the
advantage of the second class rate of
postage for any subscribers who are
nine months or more in arrears.
We have during our 22 years with
The Herald and News lost thousands
of dollars by indulging ceedit to our
subscribers and we have been forced
to the conclusion that this indulgence
has not been appreciated by them. We
hate to lose any of them but we must
have the money and we cannot send
the paper unless you pay for it. We
are sorry that we have found out
that there are so many ungrateful
people, but the more you do for some
people the less they think of you.
This is the last notice. If you fail
to receive The Herald and News after
November 1 von will know the reason.
Examine your label.
Tn Friday 's issue of The Herald
and News we suggested that the sup
ervisor should arrange for the build
ing of the steel bridge at Whitmire
across the Enoree. A gentleman from
that section of the county had stated
to us that no arrangement bad been
made by the supervisor for the re
building of this bridge. and was com
plaining that that section of the
county was not receiving the atten
tion that it should have from the
county ' supervisor.
The supervisor informs us that he
has already let the contract for the
building of this bridge at Whitnmire
and t.hat the steel part of the bridge
will be ten feet longer than the old
'bridge, and that the price for the
bridge is $3164, and that the contract
iprovides that the bridge is t'o be
built by the first of January.
We make this statement in justice
to the supervisor and for the infor
mation of those persons in thait sec
tion who were complaining that they
were not receiving the attention they
deserved.
The supervisor also states that the
bridge in Maybinton between UTnion
has- also been repaired. and that he
expects to repair the bridge over
Enoree at Keitt 's. This bridge has
been used but was somewhat damag
ed by the freshet.
The Standard Warehouse Co. is do
ing the proper thing in arranging to
let the farmers have mon& on their
cotton. Cotton is too low. It is oblig
ed to advance in price. The farmers
should be in position to get the bene
fit of this advance.
The arrangements having been
made to advaned money on cotton
business should look up. Those who
owe money should put their cotton
in the warehouse and get an advance
on it and put that money in circula
tion. One dollar started in the right
direction can do a lot of debt paying
in one day. A good place to start
it on duty is at the newspaper office.
