We like the way Mr. Chanler, De
mocratic candidate for governor of
New York, talks. There is a great
deal of hysteria about reform and the
wrongs of the -dear people and all
that sort of stuff and purity talk and
the goody good air put on by -candi
dates of high and low degree when
they are seeking office.
It is too often the case that it is
done for political purpose and there
is many times little sincerity in the
utterance. In accepting the nomina
tion Mr. Chanler is quoted as saying
among other things:
'We have had too much excite
ment and hysteria; let us right
wrongs and reform abuses calmly and
without unnecessary noise. It is not
necessary to begin a reformation by
creating a panic; reforms intelligent
ly instituted should result in a firmer
tone in business and in greater publie
confidence in existing conditions.
"There are many ways of doing the
same thing, and in recommending any
business investigations the vast army
of workers whose employment is their
means of livelihood, must be thought
of as well as the men at the head."
In an indirect allusion to the con
troversy over the race track gambling
question, Mr. Chanler said:
"I am a great believer in not un
necessarily interfering with the per
" sonal habits, customs and pastimes of
the people; I favor all healthful re
creations which tend to develop and
strengthen the body or to rest the
minds of our hard working citizens
and I declare that the line of rea
sonable and necessary regulation hav
ing been reached or even exceeded,
the more we endeavor to restrict per
sonal liberty the less likely shall we
be to promote in any effective, per
manent way, the public morals."
There is too much effort to regulate
the conduct of individuals by legisla
tion. You had better keep an eye on
the whining statesman who tries to
make it appear that he is better than
-' other people.
We would be glad to see city coun
cil start some street paving. We un
derstand they are considering the
proposition. The sentiment of our
.people would .endorse such work on
the part of the city council.
If we could get the work started
there would. be no trouble in having
the work extended. Like good roads,
writing 'and speaking will not build
them. We must start the work and
then it will go on.
Mr. Nicholas Longworth the hus
band of Miss Alice Roosevelt, says
that after Taft serves as president
for eight years the people will send
Mr. Roosevelt back to the white
house for eight years.
Mr. Longworth has denied ma:king
* the remark 'bu't if 'he did make it he
says he was joking.
We have the High School in Barn
well already and by voting for the
High School in the coming election
will be simply saying to the State
that we want more financial help, to
be given out of the State High School
fund.-Barnwell Sentinel.
What is said here is true in about
nine of ten high schools established
under the act. It is ''simply saying
to the State that we want more fin
aincial help'' from the appropriation
by the State. ''We can run our own
high school but you have appropriat
ed $50,000 and we want a part'', and
the seh'ool that really need assistance
never get it. The rules and regula
tions are so made that these schools
can't get aid.
The tendency at present in our edu
cational system in this State is to
build up the higher institutions of
learning and give the towns and ci
ties State aid for the establishment
of high schools. If people who live
in the country want to educate their
children they must send to the city
and the town.
We question the wisdom of the gov
ernor in appointing a special court in
Saluda for the trial of Herrin. It
is leaning rather too far toward the
mob's wishes and thus cultivating
and encouraging the spirit of revenge
at the expense of' justice. A proof of
our statement was shown in the at
tempt at lynching during last week,
after a sneelal term of court had
bceen ordered by the governor.
Batesharg Advocate.
It is only a short time any way1
until the regular term of the court
will be held.
ed at the regular term just as surely
and certainly as at the special term.
lIere is no _or,d judgmieni1t in order
ing a special term (f court in the-z
vic'umstances but if the pepile want
it let them have it.
The ladies of the eiri' as-oeiatin11
of Anderson are ;Cilw to have a ha;
aar this fall to raise money for car
rying on their work. This is an ac
tive organization in the city of An
derson and is dinmuch ,In heauti
fying the city.
We think it was a lady from An
derson who came to Newberry about
the time the fever was hot and the
civic association in Newberry was
alive and delivered a lecture before
the ladies.
We suggest that she be invited to
come to Newberry again. We need a
good old time camp meeting revival.
The civic association needs an
awakening. Bette'r still, the hone
owners and honekeepers and proper
ty owners .and property keepers all
need stirring up to the importance of
better kept streets and sidewalks and
more attractive- premises generally.
There is scarcely a pretty and neat
ly kept lawn in the entire city. And
for the streets and sidewalks--but
we have paved sidewalks and are go
ing to have paved streets.
County Supervisor Wicker should
do something for the Enoree bridge,
at Whitmire. If it is impossible to
get there with the chain gang he I
should give the contract to some one
to do the work. This is an import
ant trade centre and there is a large
section of our county tributary to
this point that should have attention
the same as other sections. The May
binton people cross this bridge in
going to Whitmire, though it is a
line bridge between Union and New
berry. From Maybinton the best
road and most direct route is to cross
the river at Whitmire. This point,
too, is their natural trade centre.
As far as possible we should treat
all sections of the county the same.
The county has no money but no
ioubt the newly selected senator and
members of the house would agree
to provide by necessary legislation
the means to pay for these needed
r~epairs. It was an extraordinary oc
3asion whichi took away the bridges.
I'hey miust be replaced and the soon
~r it can be done the better.
