Farm Pests that Require Foresight
for Their Control.
Upon I a k i Mir charge ol tin* Division
of Hilloinology Jit the State Experiment
Station at Clemson 1 lie writer
desires to become as familiar as possible
wit 11 t lie in see I pests that menace
lite agricultural crops of South
Carolina. It is Hie aim of this office
In be as useful as possible to Uic
{farmers, I ruck growers ami fruit
growers all over I lie Slate. \V<;
are aware that I lie losses occasioned
by insect pests are enormous ever.v
year. In order to prevent such losscf
it is necessary for this Division and
the citizens of the State, especially
the agricultural workers, to come af
?is near together, and work as closely
in harmony as possible.
'In tlie regular correspondence witli
farmers a large number of letters
contain complaints about serious injuries
caused by wire worms and
white grubs. These two problems
confront the fanner every spring and
summer. As there is tio specific that
can br- recommended against these
pests wo must depend on general
methods of farm practice. A good
system of farm practice is infinitely
better than all the sprays and
nostrums so ottcu recommended.
While the farmer thinks ahead and
plans his course of procedure for Hie
purpose of maintaining soil fertility
or regaining it when lost, he rarely
asks himself the question, What
course must I pursue to avoid insect
injury to the crop 1 am intending t.o
plant. The complaints about injurious
insects reach us when the injury
is actually being done and when
often no practicable remedy or prevent
alive can bo recommended.
In order thai this Division may be
in (.he best possible position to help
the farmers of the Slate to solve this
tmd other insect problems it is noccssar.v
that the entomologist be kept
informed as lo the farm operations
on individual farms. In order to bring
this about every farmer and ever.v
citizen of South Carolina who grow.*
plants of any kind is invited to become
a correspondent of this Division.
Every farmer is invited to read
this article and comply with I bo request
of this Division, ami we have mi
doub) that we can ho of material service
t<> such correspondents durinc
next season in helping them to avoid
losses to their crops caused bv insects
(>r other animals.
"Write to this Division saying thai
you wish to belong to the spccia
group of correspondents. \\ ? wil
then semi you blanks requesting yon
to draw a sketch of your farm orchard
of plantation, showing what crop?
are now growing and where you intend
to plant the next crop. We will
also se ml a blank circular containing
questions which we want you to answer
and a circular explaining oui
purposes. Only one farm sketch inccessary
and this will be carefully
filed at this ottice. On the blanks sent
you we expect to receive a report of
the condition of your crops once each
month. When such a report reaches
this office it will receive careful attention.
Your farm sketch will then
be referred to and in this way we
know what yon are doing at a given
time and what von intend lo do. It
will enable us to warn you at the proper
time atraiusf certain farm operations
that will encourage insect pests
and at the end of the season we arc
in position to recommend what could
best be done in order to eradicate
white grubs, wire-worms, cutworms,
chinch bugs, corn hill bugs, corn ear
worms, cotton boll worms and other
pests. In the case of farmers not
taking advantage of this ami writ inn
lo us another spring regardless these
pests, we will be obliged to state that
we are at a great disadvantage in
recommending anything that is of im
mediate practical value. To male:
these monthly reports requires li'th
time on your part and the cost ot
sending twelve such reports a yeai
is twenty-four cents.
These monthly suggestions will lit
supplemented by newspaper article;
and Experiment Station bulletin?
which will be sent to all correspond
cuts promptly when issued.
.Many insects can generally be con
trolled by some method at any tinu
when they occur in destructive nunv
hers. All citizens are invited to cor
respond with this division when I hen
is any trouble affecting their staph
crops, orchards, or shade trees. Ih
such close cooperation it will follov
that we have less insect troubles it
the future, with betler crops am
more intelligent farm practice.

THE QUESTION AND THE HOUR
(By |>r, !. B. Cranfill of the Associat

; (lie liquor traffic lias been a subject
of earnest consideration and agilai
lion ever since the i'oundation of
our government. We now think that
tlie present generation have pushed
the agitation to an inlenscr and a
higher point than has ever heen
i known before, and this is true, but
there have heen many periods before
! the present generation were born in
which great flood-tides of victory
! were achieved by the enemies of the
I saloon, it is true that the present
situation in many respects is unmatchi
ed in history, but seventy or eighty
I years ago, led by such martial spirits
- as Lyman Beeeher, John G. Whit tier,
i Eliphalct Nott and John B. Gough,
the war against the rum traffic was
waited with such zeal and ardor that
i great achievements were wrought for
; the -American home against its deadliest
foe. Tt was from this agitation
that at a later period Neal Dow
emerged and led in giving to the
world our first prohibition State.
FACE TO FACE WITH DESTINY.
A study df events in connection
with thi< great agitation reveals the
fad thai in the many and varying
aspects of the fight against the liquor
Irallic every note in the gamut of legitimate
human endeavor for the right
seems to have been touched. Wc
have had the work for moderation,
total abstinence, local temperance organizations,
fraternal temperance societies,
local and State prohibition by
law.
Beyond a doubt we have reached a
crisis in prohibition and in prohibition
party work unmatched in history.
We have come to a time when sonicthing
is going to happen. Indeed,
something is hound to happen.
We have been the victims of the
conspiracy of silence until we have
reached a degree of tension that it is
; impossible for the old rum-soaked po
litical parties to longer perpetuate, or
for the prohibition workers of the
: country l<> lunger endure.
What is done in this conflict must
lie done quickly.
I We inu-t either take ! 1 n opportunity
that now i- ?>ur< at it- flood and
, march on to victory, or for another
fifty years wo must bo bound in the
r shallows and miseries of liquor dom|
ination and the ultimate obliteration
of our great Republic.
God help u- to acquit ourselves like
I men!
