Newberry was a long time in get
ting the automobile fever but when it
came we took a good case all at
once. The one good we hope to see
result is the development of a senti
ment for good roads so strong that
the pressure can no longer be with
stood.
CENTRAL METHODIST CHURCH.
Rev. J. W. Wolling, D. D., Pastor.
Sunday was a day of special inter
est to the congregation of Central
church. The official board had re
quested a special offering for the
benevolence of the conference and a
large response was given. The pastor
explained in a striking way the
"Open door," and what it means to
the unconverted, to the believer and
to the church of God. The holy com
munion was administered and four
names, Mrs. Kate H. Sale, Geo. G.
Sale, Jr., Wilber Sale, and Miss Vista
Wood, were added to the roll, thus
completing the list of 75 names re
ceived as members during the year.
Some vases of beautiful flowers
adorned the pulpit and the commun
ion service was in perfect order.
The services at night were largely
attended and by a congregation com
posed mostly of young people. The
choir was large and well directed by
Mrs. Burr Martin; the singing was
spirited and there was a duet well
rendered by Dr. and Mrs. Whit Con
nor.
The mid-week serivees will be the
prayer meeting on Wednesday night
it 8 o'cloik and the. Epworth League
on Thursday night.
INCORPORATORS MEET.
Augusta and Edgefield Railroad
Shall It Come Via Saluda to
Newberry?
This is a question the- people of
Newberry must answer. It is certain
'this road will be built. It is proba
ble that it will be built very soon.
* A meeting .of the corporators wasj
held at Edgefield last Wednesday toj
consider proposals to make a surveyj
and cost of building. A number of
bids were submitted. Another meet
ing will be held on Friday of this1
-week to let the contract.
The following notice of the meet
ing will appear in the Edgefield News
on Wednesday and we are permitted
to print it:.
The- meeting of the incorporators
of the Augusta & Edgefield Electric
Railroad Company here last week was
.well attended, and much was accom
plished toward the survey of the road.
The only business before the board
was the report of the committee con
sisting of Messrs. Wm.' P. Calhoun,
chairman, W. A. Strom and S. B.
Mays on selecting a surveyor to sur
vcy and locate the line. Over thirty
bids were made for the survey rang
ing in price from fiftteen hun4ed to
eleven thousand dollars. The work
connected with this matter was heavy
and tedious, requiring much corres
pondence, covering a number of
weeks.
The incoroorators present were:
Mr. E. H. Aull, of Newberry. and
Messrs. S. T. Williams and W. A.
Strom, of Pleasant Lane; B. E. Nich
olson, John Sheppard, A. E. Padgett
and Win. P. Calhoun of Edgefield.
The rerport of the committete was
made by Mr. Win. P. Calhoun. It re
quired much time to class, read and
di'oeuss the bids. Besides, Messrs. R.
W. Requarth of Charleston, S. C.; W.
R. Allen, of Philadelphia, Pa., and
Lilley, of Columbia, S. C., civil en
gineers made statements to the
board. explaining the bids m::de by
them.
From so large a number of bids
made in various forms, it was a diffi
cnlt matter to decide which to accept,
especially as the board desired to
moake no mistake in selecting a sur
veyor. After sifting down the bids
considerably, on motion of Mr. John
C. Sheonard. Messrs. Win. P. Cal
houn, W. A. Strom and B. E. Nichol
son were elected by the board to go
over the remaining bids, make a se
leetion and report to an adjourned
meeting the result of their work. The
committee has carried out its instrue
tions and will report to the board at
a meeting to be held onl Frid,ay, Oe
- 1 '..when f!nm11 action will he
taken' in the matter and arrangements
mlade to have the road surveyed.
