C. C. & 0. RAILROAD.
The authorit ies of the C. C. & 0.
irailroad, an excellent new syst that
is being built from Elkhorn. Ky..
through this section. have decided to
build into Spartanburg and the con
tract from Bestick (to which point the
railroad has been graded) into Spar
ianburg, has already been let and it is
expected that the rioad will be run
ning into Spar.tanburg within a year.
It seems that for the present at least
the tracks of the C. & W. C. will be
used out of Spartanburg, and it is
probable that this road will be used
into Augusta. Nothing definite as to
this, however, has been decided and
there is some talk of the road going
-via Union. If it should go to Union
and the purpose is to go into Augus
ta, the most direct line from Union to
Augusta is via Whitmire, Newberry,
Saluda, and Edgefield.
From an interview published in the
nion Progress with the General
Manager, Mr. M. J. Caples, we learn
tha;t the route of the main line from
Spartanburg has not been definitely
decided upon, though for the present
it is stated the tracks of the C. &
W. C. will be used.
This may be an opportunity for
Newberry to get on this short line to
ithe coal fields. Certainly it is worth
looking into and the special committee
appointed by the chamber of commer
ce will give it attention.
The controversy between the Dzmo
cratic leaders and -the Republican
leaders in the pending campaign in
-eluding President Roosevelt and Mr.
Bryan has grown so voluminous that
it is impossible for a paper printed
only twice a week to keep up with it.
Mr. Bryan's reply to Roosevelt and
Mr. Roosevelt's reply to Mr. Bryan,
both of which have appeared since our
last issue, took up several columns of
the daily papers. They contain
c harges and countercharges and deal
largely with the connection of pr'om
inent officials with the Standard Oil
Company and other trusts. Mr. Has
kell who was treasurer of the Demo
cratic National Committee has re
signed. In doing so, however, he does
not admit any of the charges against
him but thinks it best for the success
of the Democratic party that he
shouild take this step. Senator For
aker, of Ohic, has also replied to the
charges against him, denying his con
~neetion with the Standard Oil Com
pany during the last several years.
Altogether 'the campaign for the
presidence is getting to be very ex
citing and interesting. It seems,
however, th.a the Democrats so far
have the aidvantage, though .it is
charged that some prominent officials
connected witih that party 'have also
been mixed up wit ht.he corporations.
The temptation to get rich quick is
very hard to resist, whether it be a
Demnocrat or Republican, who is temp
ted.
The Newberry Herald and News
'would like to say most respectfully to
the Greenville News that there has
been no deliveries 'from this newspa
per in regard to t:he Greenville sky
* seraper of any description whatever.
The Greenxville News has mixed up its
contemporaries. We will say, however,
since the subject has been raised that
we are deliethted to know that Green
ville is to have a skyscraper, and we
wish it were ten stories instead of
five
The Anderson Intelligeneer an
nounces that Mr. J. C. Gar]ington will
assume editorship of that newspa.per.
Mr. Garlington is a first class news
paper man and we wish him .and the
Intelligeneer much success.
The streets and sidewalks ,of the
city are in great need of attention.
The grass in some places is growing
over the edges of taic cement side
walks so that there is only a trail
down the centre. It looks picturesque
and unique but in rainy weather or in
'the early morning when the dew is
on it is dangerous to clean white
skirts.
