PRESENTED WITH LOVING CUP.
Dr. Scherer Remembered by His Co
Laborers-Faculty Give Expres
sion to Their Esteem.
The final meeting of the f -ulty of
Newberry college with Dr. James A.-I
B. Scherer bcfore his departure fur
Pasadena, C:l., was held on Monday
evenin.
Dr. Scherer has been president of
Newberry college for four years, suc
ceeding Dr. Geo. B. Cromer. During
his term of office the college has
grovn both in equipment and enroll
ment. More than $100.000 has been
added to the endowment fund and
several new buildings have been erect
ed until at present the equipment and
facilities of the institution are second
to no denominational college in the
State. and it is with much regret on
the part of the friends of the insti
tution that Dr. Scherer felt called
upon to tender his resignation,
though, of course, the field to which
he goes is much larger and the oppor
tunities for work much greater.
One feature of the meeting of the
faculty on Monday evening in addi
tion to bidding Dr. Seherer and his
family Godspeed was the presentation
to Dr. Scherer on the part of the
faculty of a beautiful silver loving
cup.
The presentation was made by Dr.
A. J. Bowers, who is chairman of the
faculty until the arrival of the new
president. In making the presenta
tion Dr. Bowers spoke as follows:
_Newberry college h.a' been fortun
are in her presidents.
Whoever may have preceded him,
no ?man before him or since could
la;vC excelled the self-sacrificing de
0:ion and the unyielding faith of
Dr. J. P. Smeltzer, who cheerfully
crave the best years of his being to
heroic endeavor to keep alive the
dying embers of her life- and fan
them to flame once more.
At another crisis in her history
a w.:en she second - time made
Newberry her home, a strong, true
manl of God wrought well and long
with courageous soul to build again
a solid foundation for ,her stay. and
no name is dearer to her heart than
that of Dr. Geo. W. Holland.
In still another crisis Dr. Geo. B.
Cromer was called of God and the
church to lead her assembling forces
to a larger service, and with the
steady zeal and faithfulness of a
fine, self-denial and the power of a
noble endowment of mind and body
carried her far forward in her march
towards her final triumph.
Dr. James A. B. Scherer, too diffi
dent to believe that lhe could crown
the work of such men, nevertheless
under God has (lone it and in achieve
ment gone far beyond the fondest
hopes of his best friends and most
ardlent admirers.
Persuaded by the call of a higher
duty. after four years of, in some re
spects, unparalleled success. lie has
today severed his connection with us.
In the charmed circle of college
life, where earnest men are banded
together to solve the problems con
fronting those who humbly seek to
direct the destinies of the ~young,
there are many occasions to bind us
to each other with the tender ties of
a *deep sympathy formed in the glow
of a high resolve and hope. And
while we who sit still and labor, lay
ing reverent hand to the morning
task and the noonday toil, may not
ful'ly applreciate the gifts of nature
and theC persistence of Spirit in which
ano)ther may go forth into the world 's
bus ways and return laden with the
po)wer to build and equip). yet we will
yield to none in sincere appreciation
and regard for blessed and .honora
ble accomplishment.
IIn. this spirit, therefore, we bid
failewell to Doctor Scherer'our lhon
ored president. Beguiled by the
splendor of a noble sphere. may he
realize the same measure of success,
and greater, with which heaven has
blessed him here, and may the same
zraee support and guide him, which
in trials and disappointments has sus
tained him in his efforts to strengthen
the cause of Newberry college and
Christian education.
Dr. Scherer, in the name of the
faculty I present you this loving cup.
You 'have received many tokens of
esteem and many far more valuable
than this, but vou have never receiv
ed. nor will you ever receive one ten
dTred in a sincerer spirit or with
a more fervent motive, and we trist
yo will not regard this as the least.
Dr. Scherer responded in his usual
happy style expressing his a)precia
tion of the beautiful token of remnem
brance on the p)art of his former e;
aborer s,
The following is the inseription on
the loving cup:
President James A. B. Scherer, P'a.D.
