PRESENTED WITH LOVING OUP.
Dr. Scherer Remembered by His CoLaborers?Faculty
Give Expression
to Their Esteem.
The final meeting of the faculty of
Newberry college with Dr. James A.*
B. Scherer before his departure for
Pasadena, Cal., was held on Monday
evening.
Dr. Scherer has been president of
Newberry college for four years, succeeding
Dr. (Jco. B. Cromer. During
his term of office the college has
grown both in equipment and enrollment.
More than $100,000 has been
added to the endowment fund and
several new buildings have been erected
until at present I he equipment and
facilities of I lie institution are second
to no denominational college in the
St;ile, ami it is with much regret on
the part of the friends of the institution
that Dr. Scherer felt called
upon to lender his resignation,
I hough, of course, the field to which
he goes is much larger and the opportunities
for work much greater.
One feature of the meeting of the
faculty on Monday evening in addi-1
lion to bidding' Dr. Scherer and his
laniily (iodspccd was the presentation
to |>r. Scherer on the part of the
faculty of a beautiful silver loving
Clip.
I lie presentation was made by Dr.
A. .1. Bowers, who is cluiirman of the
I acuity until the arrival of I lie new
president. In making the presentation
Dr. Dowers spoke as follows:
Newberry college has been fortunate
in her presidents.
Whoever may have preceded him,
uo >11.111 before him or since could
bav" excelled the sel I'-sacri I'jcing de "o
i ?11 ami the unyielding faith of
Dr. .1. I'. Smell/.er, who cheerfully
j'.-ive the best years of bis being to
I'oic endeavor to keep alive the
dying embers of her life and fan
t ieni to flaiue .nice more.
I At aunt her crisis in her history
: w.;-en she second time made
j Newberry her home, a strong, true
man of (ioi] wrought well and long
with courageous soul to build again
:i solid foundation for her stay, and
ii" mime is dearer to her heart than
that oi Dr. (Jco. W\ Holland.
In still another crisis Dr. (Jco. B.
Cromer was called of Cod and the
church to lead her assembling forces
to ;i larger service. and with the
steady zeal ami failhfulness of a
line, sel I -denial and the power of a
noble endowment of mind and body
carried her lar lorward i:i her march
towards her final triumph.
Dr. James A. 15. Scherer, too diffident
to believe that he could crown
the work of such men. nevertheless
under Cod has done it and in achicveI
nii'Mt gone far beyond the fondest
I hopes of his best friends ami most
anient admirers.
Persuaded by the call of a higher
duty, alter tour years of, m some respects.
unparalleled success, he has
today severed his connection with us.
In the charmed circle of college
lite, where earnest men are banded
together to solve the problems controut
ing those who humbly seek to
direct the destinies of the voung,
there are many occasions to hind us
to each other with the tender lies of
a deep sympathy formed in tlit* glow
"I ' high resolve and hope. And
while we who sii still and labor, laving
reverent hand to the morning
jt:i-M\ and the noonday toil, may not
tullv appreciate the gil'f.<? of nature
and Me persistence of Spirit iu which
I another may go forth into the world's
j bu-y ways and return laden with I he
power to build ami ci|iiip, yet we will
yield to none in sincere appreciation
and regard lor blessed and honorable
accomplishment.
j In I his spirit, therefore, we hid
i farewell to Doctor Scherer," our lionore.1
president. Beguiled by the
splendor of a noble sphere, may he
realize the same measure of success,
ami greater, with which heaven has
blessed him here, and may the same
grace support and guide him, which
in trials and disappointments has sustained
him in his ettorts to strengthen
the cause of Newberry college and
Christian education.
Dr. Scherer, in the name of the
faculty I present you this loving cup.
on -have received many tokens of
e>!eem and many far more valuable
than this, but you have never received,
nor will you ever receive one ten|
dered in a sincerer spirit or with
a more fervent motive, and we trust
you will not regard this as the least.
Dr. Scherer responded in his usual
happv style expressing his appreciation
of tlie beautiful token of rememj
hrance on the part of his former or.l:t
borers,
The following is the inscription on
I he loving cup:
