WILL GO TO LAURENS.
Prof. B. L. Jones Withdraws From
County Campaign to Accept Superintendency
Laurens Schools.
Prof. It. L. .Tones announced at
t '?' I'iunpiMun meeting ;i I Little
Mountain yesterday his withdrawal
from the nu-c fur county superintendent
<?f education, stating that lie had
accepted the position of superintendent
of the Laurens city schools. The
position pays $1,500 per year, and
l'rof. .Tones, while he disliked to withdraw
from the race, felt that he
could not consistently with his duty
! ? himself, decline the position.
l'rof. Jones has formerly served as
superintendent of the Laurens schools,
and his unanimous election to this
position, which he had not sought, is
i\ high testimonial of the appreciation
hv the people of Laurens of his
former services.
While his many friends in Newberrv
regret that l'rof. Jones will leave
Newberry, they congratulate him upon
the success which he is winning
by merit, and thev wish for him
greater success in the future.
Following is the letter which Prof.
Jones received from the secretary of
the board of trustees of the Laurens
schools tendering him the position:
'' Laurens, S. Aug. 18. 1008.
"Mr. l?. 1<. Jones, Newberry, S. (\
? Dear Sir: We have been loft in an
unfortunate situation in reference to
our school, our superintendent having
resigned us at the last moment. At
a meeting of our board to canvass the
situation and endeavor to get a man
for our school, your name having
been suggested, ami knowing you were
thoroughly familiar with our work
and would be highly acceptable to nil
our patrons, you were unanimously
elected as superintendent of our
schools for the session M108-0!), at a
salary of $lo00.00.
"We urge and request that you
give us your immediate acceptance, as
our school is scheduled to open within
the next thirty days. We appreciate
the good services you have given
us during the years you were with
us. and are satisfied you will find the
work more pleasant the coming session.
"Thanking you for your early reply.

race for county superintendent of
education:
To the Voter? of Newberry County:
The superintendent of the Laurens
graded school having resigned, the
position has been unanimously offered
uiG for the coming session, at a
salary of $1,.">0A.
I have therefore, decided to withdraw
from the race for superintendent
of education, and to accept the
above position so unexpectedly
offered me without solicitation
on mv part.
.As thi^ is a eircumstaiice which
could not possibly have been fore
-soon a! llic beginning of I lie eamp?'i).Mn
I trust that my friends will bo generous
ami not harshly criticise me for
deciding the matter, as T sec it, in
justice to myself'.
f take this means of expressing my
appreciation of the encouragement f
have so far received in the campaign,
and for such support as the vote
would have shown for me on election
day.
