"ANSWERING AN INQUIRY."
In reply I?? ;i recenl in'|iiiry which
we directed to tin- Observer. the Observer
reprints I he editorial which
called I'orih I he inquiry. From the
lone ol | lie editorial in question we
Iniil :n I erred licit lelt Observer was
airainsl a ny candidate for reelection
1o the "eiicral assembly who had served
in tlnit body who advocated eeoiioniiciil
appropriat ions in his campaign
tor reelection. We aslced tlie Observer
it' this in Terence was correct. In
reply the Observer reprints its original
editorial, and we assume that
t his means that our question is answered
in the aff'irmalive.
The Observer's argument is, as to
those candidates who ha\e served in ^
the L'eneral assembly, and who are I
ndvocal in<; economical appropriat ions I
in their campaign for re(dection, that
if they did not vote and work for
economical appropriations when serving
in the general assembly, that they
are now sccliiiiy to fool the people.
In this the Observer is correct, and
we airree with our cotemporary that
the statements ol" these candidates
Oiiirhl lo he borne out by I lie record.'
lint, says the Observer, if they did!
vote ;tnd work fur economical appro- |
priation>. the fact that I lie leifisla- j
tore was extravagant shows that j
t best men had no influence in I lie ;
leirMal nre, and I hey oiiirhl not to be J
ret uriied.
The editor of the Observer knows j
that it i- impossible for any one man
to carry the whole legislature with
him on every vote, ('arried to its logical
conclusion, the argument of the
Observer would amount to savins;
that Newberry's representatives in
the ire n era I assembly were unworthy
of tin1 trust which had been reposed
iu I hem if they did md exercise a
cont rolling influence ovc llie whole
boily. carrying the tnenibi ; s from 111 *
olher lorlv-oue counties, or a ma*
jority of iheni, with (hem on every
vole. I he editor o| I he ()bserver
knows as well as any man in Newberry
county or in I he Slate that this
position is absurd.
W e want men in the legislature
who are able l?> evert some influence
in thai body. Inn n is |oo miicli
to expect of any one mortal that he
carry the whole hod\ with him. If
lie is risrht. I he whole body onirht to
be willi hi iu. There is no doubt of
thai. Hut, surely, if a man advocates
the riirld. and worts for the riirlit
as he sees it. he has done his duty.
Hul the Observer's argument is directed
airainsl the people win have
worked for the riirht, even as the
Observer ses it, because the wrouir,
even as ihe (Observer sees | he w rmi',',
has prevailed. We make inis .statement
on Ihe assumption I hat I he onserver
favors now, as ii lias favored
in the past, ccouomv and not extravagance
in the adiuiuistration of ?overniucnr.
If we are permilled to ask another
question. ue Would like |o know what
particular candidates I lie Observer's
utterances are directed against.
Ihe Observer > edilorial is public
hi d ui I u 11 in a iii11 her c<duinu.
REGISTER.
Il is estimated that there are about
five hundred while voters in Newberry
county who have not yet registered.
I inler the law ii is necessarv
lo have a new reuist ral ion ? crliticate
(his year in order to vote in
the irencral election. It is the duly
ot every citizen to vole, and those
who have not yet registered are urired
to do so without delay. It is important
that every citi/en qualified to
vote iu Newberry county should be
registered.
About 100 names have already
been placed on ihe reyist ra I ion books
this vear. A lew o| these are netrroes,
Willi five huuderd more vet
to i e>; i s| er, the vol in- streu?lh of
New berry count v is somelhiii" like
2.000.
The supervisors o| registration will
be in Newberry until the first of
September, alter which time they
will v i si | ihe various townships,
spending one day in each. There is
no need, however, for most of those
who have not yet registered to wait
until the supervisors come to their
respective townships. Most of them
will be in New berry before the first
of September, and it will lake only a
minute for Ihei - to call at i he office,
formerly occupied bv the supervisor,
in the old court house, where the supervisors
of" registration are in session,
and secure their certificates.
It is nn important matter, and one
I which our citizens should not neglect
W'illiam .Jennings Bryan was 01
Wednesday officially notified of hinominal
ion for I Ik* presidency by tin
Democratic party. This is (lie third
time Mr. Bryan has been officially notified
of a nomination. We liopi

Answering an Inquiry.
Newberry ()hservei'.
" I* roni the lout' of some of its recent
editorials, it might appear that
the Newberry Observer is against anv
candidate lor reelection to the general
assembly who has served in that
bod\ who advocates economical appropriations
in his campaign for reelection.
We desire to inquire of tin
Observer if ibis is correct."?Herald

I he Observer cannot answer the inquiry
better than by repeating what
it lias said on I bis sub ject :
