COURIERS ACROSS SAHARA.
New Service From Niger to Mediterranean?A
1,000 Mile Desert
Route.
Pall Mall Gazette.
Though a journey across the Sahara
is still an undertaking of some
magnitude, the pacification of the
central region by the French has
been wonderfully rapid during the
last five years.
Removed as it seems from the exciting
influence of events in Morocco,
and undisturbed by Senussife propaganda,
the French ollicers have been
able to establish friendly relations
with the Tuareg and other Berber
tribes, and have organized a chain of
posts right across the desert connecting
Algeria with French West Africa.
1 lie route for the telegraph has been
surveyed and a "wireless" installation
is being established.
Meantime, by the last mail from
Dakar the governor of French West
Africa reports that he has instituted
a monthly service by couriers between
the Niger and the Mediterranean,
The Southern point of departure will
be the ancient town of fiao on the
Niger, some two hundred milos below
Timbuktu, and the point of departure
from the noi j'i Insalah in tlu
oasis ot I uat, which is some three
hundred miles south of the rail head
in the Sud Oranasis, intermediate
posts have been established at Agadef
and I lie Ahaggar. The oversight ol
the new route covers fully 1,000 milef
of desert.
Much is expected in the way of accustoming
the wild tribesmen of the
Sahara to the new order of thing*
from the ruglar running of service
and possibly some development ol
trade may follow. But at present
it will be useful chiefly as a means ol
rapid communication between tlx
French military posts. It is intended
returning home from the Niger dis
tricts shall make use of the transslnv
ran route, which will be more direel
and less costly than the journey fron
<>r to France via Senegal or Dnlio
mey. Both horses and camels will b<
used on the new service.
Rowdy Negro Sent to Gang.
Mr. O. A. Felker reported to Magt
istrate Hleaso a few days ago that
Forest Long, colored, was given to
firing his pistol on the poor house
public road when returning from
I Newberry.
Magistrate Bleaso issued a warrant
for Long and placed it in the hands
i of Constable Chappell for services. It
wasn't long before Mr. Chappell had
( tho offender in his hands. Yesterday
i lie was tried before tho magistrate
i and leceived a sentence of thirty
days or a fine of $40 for carrying a
pistol, and sentenced for thirty days
' or $.'{() lor shooting on the public
highway. Long couldn't raise t':e
1 money and had to cake the days.
Magistrate Blease warned him that,
if he was brought before him again
he would try to find some way to
make his punshimcnt more severe as
it was his purpose to keep the highways
i roe from rowdyism and pistol
shooting.
Wi)l Pay 4 1-2 Per Cent.
In our report of tho condition of
the financial institutions of Newberry
county last week it was stated
that the People's National Hank of
Prosperity would pay a semi-annual
dividend of it per cent. This was erronuous,
as the dividend declared was
4 1-2 per cent. This is an excellent
showing for the institution and reflects
credit upon its directors and
ollicers.
