|lmlA and E. H. AULL, EDITOR. Entered at the Postoffice at Newberry, S. C., as 2nd class matter. Friday, May 29, 1908. The question of building good roads in No. 6 township is up to the voters of the township themselves. A great many of the taxpayers will have no voice. The levy looks large, we grant, hut to what better use could the people who use the public roads put their money than to the permanent improvement of the roads. THE CATTLE TICK. Till-: COTT< j\' TICK We are in receipt of a letter from Mr. M. Ray Powers, veterinarian at Cleinson college in which he says that he has arranged to send copies of the Cleinson College Kxtension Work bulletin \'o. 4 to our Hibscribers. As staled in the last issue tlii.i bulletin treats entirely of the cattle tick and gives valuable information as (o the manner of exterminating the tick and also as to the damage which is done to the cattle industry in this State by the cattle lick, lie says that last year the board of trustees appropriated $4joo for this purpose instead of $1500 as we staled and thai this year he lias already asked for .$7000 to carry on the work. We understood from the report which we bad during the session of the legislature and the fLrnus were furnished by the department at Washington, that the Cleinson colVtrc authorities spent $1500 in order to carry out the provision of the act of the legislature of 1 <J07 and it was upon these figures that our statement was based as to the amount which had been spent bv the board o| trustees of Cleinson for thi.s purpose. We asked the finance committee of the senate during the session of the legislature to make the appropriation $10,000. We hope that the board of trustees of Cleinson will grant the request of Dr. Towers and make the appropriation $7000. It will be money well spent and will also enable the State to secure a larger portion from the Federal government. As we see it, il is a very important work, not only in the matter of saving cattle which we now have, but if the tick can be eradicated it will encourage the growing of cattle in this State which means diversified farming and the improvement of our farm lands. In speaking of the work Dr. Powers writes to the editor of The Herald and News as lollows: "Our work last year was very difficult, probably the most difficult that we will encounter as we had a large number of mountain people to deal with and considerable opposition t<i overcome, especially in the northern portion ot these counties. The people now understand the work much In tterand are giving us hearty support and I believe that the work in the next counties that we take up will be much easier as people are belter educated and have already seen the manner in which we have carried on the work in thes?! counties. We find that it is absolutely necessary to instruct the people and explain the object of the work before we can expect much assistance and 1 especially appreciate the assistance that lias been given us by prominent newspaper men. I wish to thank vou for vouv interest and assistance in the past and if I can be of anv service t( you, kindly let nie know." NOTICE. I nited States of America, District of South Carolina.
