Y., May 25.? "In view of the existing mental condition of Harry K. Thaw, the safety of the public is better insured bv his remaining in custody and under observation until he has recovered, or until such time as it shall be reasonably certain that there is no danger of a recurring attack of the delusion or whatever it may be." 1 his is the decision readied by Justice Morschauser of the State supreme court in a decision handed down today in the matter of Thaw's application for release from Mat' teawan asylum for the criminal insane on a writ of habeas corpus. Thaw who has been in jail here since the insanity hearing was begun was quickly appraised by his counsel of the adverse nature of the decision and lias accepted apparently with resignation the decree that he is still insane and that the interest of the public will be best served by denying him liberty. I 'ending the signing of the papers of recommitment which probably will not be done before a week from next Saturday Thaw will occupy Sheriff C hauler's suite in the county building here. In the meantime an eflort will be made by Thaw's attorneys to induce District Attorney Jerome to consent to the commitment of the prisoner to one of the Stale hospitals other than Matteawan. It is said that in event of Mr. Jerome giving his consent to such a changc no appeal will be taken from Justice Morchauscrs decision. I'.veil it an appeal were taken it could not be argued before fall. HOLD COTTON FOR THE MAXIMUM Nothing to Lose by Holding and Much to I be Gained. ( otton has advanced $7.50 per bale in ten days and if we will hold to it, and not be influenced to sell, it will in the next ten days make the same advance and the maximum wil be reached. Remember the HJ07 crop is 4,500,000 bales short. I lr.s makes cotton scarce, not enough lor consumption. Crop conditions the lowest in 20 vears. ( >11 the 24th. Texas and ( )klahoina were visited by the most destructive flood that has ever been known. ( )n May foth, our national president, ( . S. Uarrett, issued a circular letter asking the union men to plow up 10 per cent of the cotton planted and put it in food crops. One million acres have Immmi reported plowed up. I his looks as if the boys mean business and will stand behind their guns. Do not listen to those who tell you to sell, it is going lower, when they know it will go upward bv June. Do not torg?H that corn is $1,10 per bushei and plenty of time to plant yet. \\ ell filled corn-cribs and smoke-houses will always make cotton bring the maximum price. r?o(h the Kuropcau and American mills are about out of cotton, so hold to your spot and Lj'et the maxi| mum price. C., May 26.?Xorth C arolina was carried for State prohibition today by a majority that is estimated at trom 40.000 to 42,000 on reports and estimates received up to midnight. The prohibition ticket has carried 7& (>ut of the 98 counties by majorities approximating 48,000. The anti-prohibition ticket has 20 counties by majorities approximating This calculation is based on some estimates and the prohibition leaders say it is possible for the prohibition majority to reach 50,000. A close estimate of the vote would give a prohibition majority of about 45.000. I he election passed off very quietly, no disturbances of any moment being reported. The total vote cast in the State was about 175.000. statkm i'.xt ok t11 k opposition. Salisbury, \\ tMay 25. ( hairmap. IJoydeu ol the anti-prohibition forces made this statement at 8:^0 >Yloek tonight in reference to today s election : "Scattering reports from 35 counties shw tlit the vote on prohibition will be very close, and until the returns are in from all the counties I do not concede that the State has gone for prohibition. The vote at this hour shows that Raleigh. Wimington, Salisbury and some other cities have voted in favor of the retention of the locai option system. Considering that the State already was 85 per cent, prohibition the vote indicates that the people are against the mixing of religion with politics." j Try TBEO.
