L AN OLD TIME LETTER. Written from Mexico by a Sergeant of the Famous Palmetto Regiment.. i'hrtiugh the courtesy of Mr. \V. S. Sm-llinu- we publish tlu> following letter fit.),, ;, S?u,ih Carolina soldier, in the war will, Mexico, sixlv vears a_(?. i It uas written before tiie invention of envelopes and postage stamps, on three pages of foolscap, folded and sealed with a wafer, the address being written on the fourth page. The postage, 10 cents, was stamped above the name of the addressee: San Angel, near City Mexico, February 13th, 1848. i 'Dear James I have seated myself for the purpose of writing to you once more hoping these few lines may reach you and find you enjoying a full portion L of health, I am not so well at present I but. thank Cod T am able to attend to my duty as yet, the boys are generI ally in moderate health that is tird few of them who are living and at this place. T expect you have seen apt- Walker or J. M. Counts and heard them say who was here and l who was living. T must say that M. ( v. Z. Bailey died since Capt. Walker left, us, ho died at this place (San Angel) on rhe 0th, instant, and was dep cenIly buried with the usual escort which soldiers have to bury them. Tames I have wrote you two or three & I'e,,crs si,u'? 1 1(,ceive,l yours and ? have anxiously looked for an answer from then, but have not as ve{ re$ ceivod one, T hope I nia.v net same by ^ a mail we are looking for now wliicii | Ul11 h(' I'"' city in three or four days. 1 have no news fo write to you at present as everything here appear to be quiet at this fiem a treaty of Peace has been signed bv the commissioners of both liepublicks. I supose everything is waiting now to see if lire two congresses will ratifv the treaty, Cod grant they may as I am tired of soldiering and anxious to get back home once more, we have rumors hero that it was likely that, the president would send an order to ha\e fhe Palmetto Regiment disbanded. but again we hear thai lie will not. 1 tlon'I think he will either as it would be showing us too much partiality. as there is oilier volunteer regiments here who want to got home just, as bad as we do though tlrev have not suffered as much as we altogether. T assure you T would rather hear that peace was actually announced than anything else, then T would know thai there would be a chance for us to get home, and honve would be the greatest Palace to me now of any other in this world, the palmetto -Stale is the Stale which I love above | any other T ever saw. there is peace I always, here you dare not walk out or (sitrhl of the camp or you are liable lo be assassinated, many have been already assassinated, we arc amid our 'enomys and should expool nothing lictfer of a heaifhenish kind of people they are no more than a band of highway robbers any way, I am totaly \ with Mic.'i 111, the groat Oi.l part uf then; r.rc half naked am starved nearly tu death, in short the; are miK'h worse oil' than the puores of our slaves in South Carolina. Kv on on the rice plantations you wirl 110 see the negroes so near naked o starved as the po r Indians are here now as for the country here in Moxic< I am very well pleased, the lands ar good hut very mountainous, we ar in the valley of Mexico, the valley are good lands, all. of the valleys ar " open prairie and" there is very littl timbered land in Mexico as I hav seen yet, where the farmers have fnc ' es it is made of rocks piled up, som have no fence at all. the stock holder in this country have . shepperds 1 : mind them and in this case you se they have no use for fences, the ci 1 ties here are very pretty, the house; all build of brick, mud or rock am plastered over, the tops of the house are all flat and would servo for fort if nothing hut muskes-i could lie-fir eu on them, hut when the cannon tun , loose oil them they s'?;>n crumb) down then the muskets can niaki I hem poor Mexicans scamivr awa1 fast. I will say no ni:>re of ibis count r; now, !)iii look forward for peace whei 1 trust 1 may be spared ; > come t< that happy land from which 1 an now so far away, but should it be nn lot yet to fall in Mexico (5od gran we may meet in ax happier worh above where there will he no partim or war, should 1 be .spared I will tel you all 1 have seen here or as mucl as I can. I know to tell you all i would be out of my power, though could tell you enough to tire you o listening at me, nothing more but wil remain your sincere friend till death give my best respects to all impiirim friends, especially to Miss II. E. L accept the same for yourself. Yours respect fully, James I. Thruston, Serut. Palmetto Reyt, S. C. V. X. THREE ON ONE MAIL DELIVERS But the Postoffice Department Does n't Pay the Two Dogs. New Vork Sun. Persons liviny in one of the dis tricts bordering on Prospect Park Brooklyn, are served by three Jette carriers aT*the same time. Only on< of them wears the regulation gray un iform and blows a whistle and drawi yovernment pay. The other two carriers wear browi uniforms which run into white on tin leys, and they announce their deliv eries with a bark. By breed they an collies. Much of the district covered b; this carrier is along the Ocean Park way, which includes an automobih and carriage driveway, two eycli paths, a bridle path, truekiny roa< and side walks. It isn't convenien for the carrier to cross and recros". the parkway two or three times in i block. The doys solve lie problen for him. When a piece of mail matter tha doesn't require careful handliny is t< be delivered it yoes into the mout) ol one of the collies, the mastei points toward the house where tin mail is to be left, and the doy Irot: off to deliver it. When the doy': bark is lietird' on the porch, tin householders know that there is mai for tlieni. If they do not answer the bark im mediately the doy runs around to tin back door. Neither of these doys wil let yo of a letter or newspaper unles: the person takiny it is at the front oi rear door. While the post docs are plenty i>i< enouyh to take care of themselves thv other doys nlony the route appear t< have entered into a conspiracy to bar! in chorus aiid with great viyor as soon as the collies and their mastei appear. As a result the post doy sometimes have trouble in making themselves beard inside the house while the general barkiny which fol lows (lie first round of the three mai carriers al 7 a. m. is not hailed wit I much satisfaction by persons win aren't through sleeping. SHIPPING LIVE MINNOWS DRY A Bunch of Them Sent Thus, Without Loss From New York to Detroit. New York Sun. The salt water minnow is a hardy little fish. It will lie in the mud, out ol water, left there by a recediny tide, and keep alive all right for some hours, until water comes to it again - with tiro next flood. Ami so, while 1 | commonly all tishes when trausporty ) e<i over land are carried in cans ol t tanks filled with water, must be kept - constantly aerated while the fishes t tor considerable distances out of watr er it caretully packed, as they are sometimes shipped to anglers for i? ha it. \\ hat is perhaps a record shipment e of minnows, for the results attained, s is one lately made from the New e York Aquarium to the aquavium in e Detroit. The Detroit aequariuui wante ed a bunch of salt water minnows, some to feed to its marine fishes and e some for exhibition purposes, and for 8 these itfinnolvs it sent to the New u York Aquarium, which shipped tlve required little fishes to the number - of 500. ^ For the shipment there was made here a box about 20 inches square by inches deep, around the innei; sides of which cleats were nailed ^ about three inches from the top. Then t the bottom ol. lire box was covered ? with wet eel urass. and on this the little minnows, from 2 1-2 to -I inches in lennth, were laid carefully to be protected with another layer of eel k - rass laid over them. Ami then there 1 vlrc placed in the box on (he top ' layer of col "rass o'ver the fishes strips of wood with their ends sup' ported on the cleats nailed" to the inj ner sides ol the box. and then there was put in on these strips ice enough j to til] the box. The water from the gradually melting ice would provide 1 sufficient moisture for the fishes on | the way and drainage was provided lor by holes bored in the bottom of ^ the box. The minnows were shipped on a ( fast train and thus packed they went through in good condition and cainv out all alive. 1| was about eighteen hours alter they left the aquarium heiv that they were unpacked in the aquarium in Detroit, but when the\ were placed in the water there tIre . whole "><?() found their fins and swan off gayly. i I A girl should never know a mar i) ! whom she would be ?sftamed to have her mother know she knows. r Once in a great while a married woman admits that she doesn't wish . she had remained single. ; ) Plant Wood's \ // Garden Seeds y J FOR SUPERIOR VEGE.
