I'lle public stpiare for many years , has been used largely as a wag'on yard and il frequently happens that il is so crowded I hat not only is I here insufficient room for the wagons and vehicles but the si reels are " blocked and congestion is so ureal thai il is impossible for vehicles to p:iss through the streets. A commit-i " tee was appointed to look into this mailer id securing a lof which would d be convenient and sufficiently coinmo" dious in avoid the congest ion upon I he e public sipiare. Mr. \Y\ K. Mr. CJeo. S. Mower 0 offered a lot fronting" oil Harrington 0 street near the jail ami containing ^ about one acre for $.>200. Mr. P. K. Scot I olfered another loj near the Hradley place on Scoffs creek containing about two acres, al $.">000. Of course the purchase of these lots s -would have to be made through city > council. A resolution was adopted ' expressing the opinion of the chamber of commerce that a suitable wagon t yard be provided. Considerable discussion was evinced on the proposition of recommending; to council the [_ purchase of one or both <>f the lots which have been mentioned and it _ was finally decided to appoint a commit lee to appear before the council and reconvmend the selection by council'of some suitable place. The public stpiare should be turned into a park and the hitching- or standing; of wagons upon it should not d be permit led, but until a suitable is place is provided it is almost necescs sary to use the public square as a wagon yard. Mr. K. II. Au 11. who was in Washlnirlon last week, made report as to id the public building- which is proposed for Newberry and he staled that Congressman Aiken assured iiim that he.
